Poisonous political rhetoric, now common after the Brexit Referendum, threatens democracy and must be defeated by Parliament, Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Revd Nick Baines told the House of Lords. He was speaking last week in a motion condemning the prevalence of violent and over-simplistic "populist" language.  Read the full speech here
Yorkshire County Cricket Club have welcomed a new club chaplain at the start of the cricketing season. The Right Reverend Chris Edmondson, the former Bishop of Bolton and Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Leeds, has succeeded the Canon Max Wigley following 15 years in the role.  Read more here
Freshly uncovered ancient secrets will be on display at Leeds Minster as part of this year's Church Explorers Festival, which is entitled Lost and Found. The Minster will be hosting an event exploring techniques for recording and conserving church furniture and monuments, and for creating accessible materials to interpret them. Read more here
Clergy from the Diocese of Leeds came together for the start of a new cricket season, competing in their first match of the 69th Church Times Cricket Cup. On a beautiful, sunny afternoon at Romiley Cricket Club in Stockport the Diocese of Leeds made a winning start in their first match against the diocese's of Liverpool and Chester. Read more here
This year’s annual Harold Wilson Lecture at the University of Huddersfield will be delivered by the Rt Revd Nick Baines, Anglican Bishop of Leeds. Its title is 'The Will of the People' in which Bishop Nick will explore the state of politics in today's world.  Read more here
Around the Areas
Sir Rod Stewart met up with Father Paul Cartwright, deputy lead chaplain for West Yorkshire Police , during a charity concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Former police officer Fr Paul, of St Peter the Apostle & St John the Baptist, Barnsley, played alongside the British Police Symphony Orchestra and mass police choirs from around the country. The third Batley Iftar, inspired by murdered MP Jo Cox, took place on Saturday, May 11 , at Upper Batley High School after a sudden move from Batley Memorial Gardens due to the wet weather. Despite the change of location, over 700 people attended the event organised by volunteer group - More in Common Batley and Spen, a group that came together after the murder of Jo Cox MP in 2016. BBC cameras came to St Paul's, Ireland Wood to film footage for a feature on how childhood obesity in Leeds is on the decline. New statistics show that the city is bucking the trend and healthy living projects seem to be paying off. St Paul's has engaged with the local community to promote better lifestyles and the camera crew filmed at its thriving tots' group. Read more here
Ripon Cathedral Beer Festival took place in the Dean’s Garden on a chilly and damp Bank Holiday Monday, but 1,000 hardy folk braved the weather to give their support. Some £12,500 was raised for the cathedral future development fund. Over 40 different local beers were available including the popular G&P Gin infused beer from Daleside Brewery and local Sleningford Cider. Read more here
Parishioners raised their glasses at a beer festival to celebrate completed refurbishments at Christ Church, Oakworth . It reopened on Palm Sunday after a major reordering of its worship space, costing over £125,000, and it hosted its 2nd Annual Church Beer Festival, stretching from Thursday, May 9 to Saturday, May 11. Former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams will be delivering special lectures on Monday, May 20 at Bradford Cathedral. He will look at what goes on in the writing of poetry, in various contexts across the centuries – the place of rhyme and metre, the way images can be used, and the relation between poetry and other kinds of seeing or thinking, including religious f aith. On Sunday, June 2 Ripon Cathedral will host a special Thy Kingdom Come event for the Diocese of Leeds . At 3.30pm Bishop Nick will lead a short gathering before those in attendance are invited to explore pilgrimages and prayer stations inside and outside the Cathedral. Following a short closing act of worship, afternoon tea will then be served.
God’s creation is in trouble and consequently so are we. People are speaking up: students coming out on climate strikes and councils such as Leeds, Kirklees, Otley are declaring climate emergencies. But what would Jesus do? And what should my church do? Join us on Saturday, June 8 for an Environmental Mission Training Day designed to help you and your church live out the good news of the gospel.  Find out more here
Taking place in each of the areas, we are inviting people to join us for Social Media Skills Camps. These evenings aim to bring people to gether to share, discuss and discover how we can best use social media in our churches. The first will be at Church House, Leeds on Tuesday, June 18 at 7pm. On Friday, May 24 the DAC will partner with the National Stewardship Team to run a Church Building Project Workshop. Taking place at Church House, Leeds from 9.30am the workshop is designed for clergy, churchwardens, PCC members or fabric managers who are considering larger building projects in their church, such as reordering or extensions. From Sunday, May 12 to Sunday, May 26 Pray for Schools Fortnight will be taking place. The vision is to bring together people from local churches and others involved in education – parents, students, teachers, g overnors, staff and volunteers – to pray strategically for schools in their area and those involved in them. From Ascension (May 30) to Pentecost (June 9) the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have invited Christians around the world to pray for more people to know Christ. The invitation comes in the run-up to the now-annual Thy Kingdom Come global wave of prayer. If your church would like to get involved, there are lots of great resources available on the Thy Kingdom Come website.
The free monthly printed news for June was delivered around the diocese on May 15 -   check pick-up points and where your church's are here. This month's issue includes: Bishop Nick looking forward after a welcome return to Yorkshire, Thy Kingdom Come, faith trail in Bradford and a new principal for the College of the Resurrection.

Are you wanting to reduce your library? Theological Colleges overseas can make good use of those books and there is an effective means to pass them on. As part of the Charity Feed the Minds, the Overseas Book Service provides Colleges throughout the African and Asian continents with contributions to their libraries.
