News
Fountains Church is the name of a new Christian worship centre which will overlook Bradford’s City Park. The Church of England initiative, to be created in a former nightspot near the city’s famous fountains, was announced earlier this year. Its permanent location will be confirmed this summer, but the newly-christened church will start life at nearby Glyde House next month. Read more here
As a mark of solidarity following the devastating fire at Notre Dame Cathedral, the tenor bell at Leeds Minster will be tolled for 7 minutes at 7pm on Thursday. The request was made of all churches and cathedrals by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York in response to a suggestion by the British Ambassador to France. Churches across the diocese, including Ripon and Bradford Cathedrals, will join Leeds Minster tomorrow by tolling their bells. Read more here
A joyful entry was made by the congregation of All Saint’s Normanton on Palm Sunday, following the successful completion of a re-ordering project at their church. Other Palm Sunday processions, many featuring donkeys at the head, have also taken place across the diocese to mark the start of Holy Week. Read more here
St Peter & St Leonard's, Horbury a parish of The Society, held a packed Chrism Mass on Palm Sunday with a congregation of lay folk, ordinands, deacons and priests from across the diocese. Fr Christopher Johnson, vicar of Horbury, welcomed the Rt Revd Tony Robinson, Bishop of Wakefield and chairman of The Society, who conducted the ceremony which is one of the most solemn and significant liturgical events of the year.  Read more here
The Diocesan Advisory Committee has welcomed its new chair, the Ven Peter Townley, Archdeacon of Pontefract. The role of the DAC Chair is to oversee the balance between the need for parishes to improve their buildings in order to engage with the local community in a relevant and vibrant manner, and the desire to conserve our important church heritage.  Read more here
A digital front row seat to church events at St Mark's Harrogate will be given to Instagram users this Easter. The congregation will be taking over the Diocese of Leeds Instagram account to allow followers to see pictures and short video clips of their various services, using the Instagram Stories feature.  Read more here
Bellringing teams and campanologists from our diocese and beyond have gathered in Harrogate to celebrate all things ringing. Some 300 bellringers, their families and friends, enjoyed the event entitled ‘A Grand Day Out’ at the Pavilions, the Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate, on Saturday, April 13. Read more here
The very first Social Media Skills Camps will be held across our diocese this Summer. In this initiative, lead by the Diocese of Leeds Communications team, these special events will bring people together who are familiar with current trends and platforms for an evening to discuss and discover how social media can be best used to spread the Good News of Jesus.  Read more here
Around the Areas
What does it mean to be human? That is the question that has been addressed by the Dean of Wakefield, the Very Revd Simon Cowling, in a series of special talks for Holy Week. Since Monday, the talks have used the poetry of Mark Jarman in Questions for Ecclesiastes and the Belgian expressionist painter, Gustave van de Woestyne’s Last Supper as prompts to thought and reflection on the human condition. Former Archbishop of Canterbury and now Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, Dr Rowan Williams will be delivering special lectures on Monday, May 20 at Bradford Cathedral. He will look at what goes on in the writing of poetry, in various contexts across the centuries – the place of rhyme and metre, the way images can be used, and the relation between poetry and other kinds of seeing or thinking, including religious faith. A replacement lighting project based on green principles is now helping St Hilda’s, Halifax cut its electricity bills and has brightened its worship. The project to replace ten halogen flood lights with LED equivalents started because of a Green Journey report, commissioned by the diocese in 2017. “This offered a saving in energy, CO2 reductions and a significant saving on our electricity costs,” said St Hilda’s PCC secretary Barbara Robinson. The Yorkshire three peaks challenge has been completed by the vicar of St Oswald’s Church, Guiseley to raise money for the Sick Children’s Trust. The eleven hour challenge, completed alongside officers of the reserves ship HMS Ceres, was completed to support the four-year-old son of one of the petty officers, who has recently been diagnosed with cancer. Faith-sharing courses, community events and church services have been taking place in Skipton to tell people the message of Jesus in 2019. All Saints' Church, Earby and St. Mary's, Kelbrook together with the local Baptist, Methodist and Roman Catholic churches in Skipton have undertaken this Churches Together initiative called #doyouknowHim. Monday, June 3 the Church of England Digital Team are travelling to Church House, Leeds to deliver a training day exploring digital and social media for churches. It is for anyone in a parish involved with their churches social media, website or A Church Near You page. Running from 10am until 4pm, it will be a practical day focused on topics such as: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Dealing with negativity online, Writing for the web and A Church Near You. Every Parish is encouraged to have a disability representative . This important training day on Saturday, May 11 outlines the role of the disability rep and explains the support and information available. The event takes place in Ripon, and is open for existing reps and anyone else considering the role. Refreshments will be provided but please bring a packed lunch with you. Find out more here
On Saturday, May 11 at 10am the Big Turnaround day will be taking place at Halifax Minster. Church leaders, PCC members and clergy are invited to explore how to change the culture of our churches, build an effective evangelism strategy, make plans and discover or re-discovering the inspiration of God’s Holy Spirit. In effect it is a LyCiG follow-up day and a great opportunity to share the vision and direction of travel. For m ore information and to book please visit the Eventbrite page.
Following on from the Archbishops’ call for us to pray together as a nation as small groups of friends. What is the place of Friendship and Prayer in the life of our Church? Being Alone Together t akes place on Saturday, May 18 at St John's Church, Halifax and is organised by the Huddersfield Area Prayer and Spirituality Team. On Thursday, May 9 Livability , the UK's largest Christian disability charity, will be delivering a course at Trinity Church in Ossett to train churches to respond to the challenge of disability . Whether it’s members of the youth group who have autism, older people with sight or hearing loss, people with learning disabilities or families struggling to care for a relative with dementia, every church has members affected by disability. The free monthly printed news for May was delivered around the diocese on April 15 -   check pick-up points and where your church's are here. This month's issue includes: a New Strategy for our Maturing Diocese approved by Synod, a 'Green Journey' refreshed for future needs, a Diocesan education conference bringing 200 delegates to Leeds and Prog Rock coming to our Cathedrals.
John Neale (pictured), a member of St Luke’s Church, Cleckheaton, has recently carried out restoration work on church Nativity and Easter figures, restoring and re painting them to their former glory. Previously employed as a decorator, John is a keen artist and craftsmen who wants to help churches in the diocese with similar sets in need of repair. Are you wanting to reduce your library? Theological Colleges overseas can make good use of those books and there is an effective means to pass them on. As part of the Charity Feed the Minds, the Overseas Book Service provides Colleges throughout the African and Asian continents with contributions to their libraries.
