Resilient rural communities hit by this week’s devastating floods have been visited and praised by Bishop Helen-Ann Hartley. Revd Caroline Hewlett, vicar of Swaledale with Arkengarthdale, was one of dozens in Swaledale and Wensleydale forced out of their homes after a deluge filled them with filthy water. Read more here
Sacre Bleu! A cat owned by one of our vicars smuggled itself into France by stowing away in the family caravan. Revd Jane Brown of St Mary’s Garforth, and husband Paul, had just pulled into a motorway services at the start of their summer holiday when they heard a desperate miaow. Read more here
A photo competition to celebrate all Christian life, great and small, across our diocese has returned to coincide with the Summer holidays. “Capture a Christian Summer” is the theme of the fun project, which aims to generate a fantastic gallery of people and places of worship.   Read more here
Everyone who works in our cathedral and church shops is invited to a special conference and trade fair in Durham next month. The Cathedral and Church Shops Association (CCSA), is holding its annual gathering, with more than 40 suppliers of gifts and religious items having stands at Durham Cathedral on September 25 and 26.   Read more here
Around the Areas
Four major faith establishments, including Bradford Cathedral, opened their doors to the public as part of Bradford’s Iconic Places of Worship Tour. The annual event enables people from different backgrounds, faiths, no-faith, gender and age to visit different places of worship and listen to speakers explaining the main beliefs of each religion. Halifax Minster has seen a great increase in the number of visitors this summer following the recent Gentlemen Jack TV series. The popular BBC One show first aired in April and follows the life of the famous landowner Anne Lister, who was baptised at Halifax Minster in 1791 and worshipped regularly there.  Read more here
This summer St John’s Church in Yeadon has celebrated 175 years as a place of worship . To mark this special occasion the church opened its doors and grounds to the public for an action packed, free community fun day.  Read more here
“An inspiring and challenging service” focusing on ‘ Caring for Creation ’ has been held in a local Langthorpe pub. The service was led by lay members of All Saints’ Kirby Hill who praised God for the beauty of creation and reflected on the fragility of the world.  Read more here
Wakefield Cathedral is asking people to share their favourite places to help create a picture postcard art show this summer to go alongside Wakefield artist Tony Wade’s Boundary exhibition, which opened on Saturday, August 3. Read more here
On Saturday, September 7 the first Church of England’s Labs Learning Roadshow will be taking place. Held at St George’s Church, Leeds, the day-long digital conference aims to inspire and equip Church of England churches to sh are Good News, grow people’s faith and bring more people to faith by harnessing digital and social media. Taking place in each of the areas, we are inviting people to join us for Social Media Skills Camps. These evenings aim to bring people to gether to share, discuss and discover how we can best use social media in our churches. The next will be at St Mark's, Harrogate on Wednesday, September 11 at 7pm. Find out more and book a place here.
Bradford Cathedral has launched its Autumn events programme . You can now find out more about the events, services and exhibitions to be held between September and December by visiting their website . You can also reserve your place for many of these events on their Eventbrite page.
On Friday, September 6 the Caring for your Churchyard Conference will be taking place at St Chad's Headingley from 10am. It is for all those interested in making the most of your churchyard to increase biodiversity and develop a space for all to enjoy. Read more and book a place here.
On Saturday, August 17 you are invited to join a short pilgrimage through the beautiful countryside which surrounds Ripon . It will be approximately 6-8 miles and there will be a stop for refreshments and a packed lunch. It will start at 10am and there will be lifts available from the West End of Ripon Cathedral from 9.30am.  Find out more here.
Are you interested in visiting Sudan in late October/early November ? Visits have been successfully run for a number of years with small groups visiting churches, schools and other projects run by the Episcopal Church of Sudan. Christian Aid are urging churches and people across Yorkshire to support an emergency appeal that is offering a lifeline to those impacted by torrential rain, floods and landslides that h ave misplaced millions of people across India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Here is the last Clergy Cricket Vlog of 2019. This year we have followed the Diocese of Leeds as they have competed in the Church Times Cricket Cup. They faced the Diocese of London in the semi finals, so an all important place in the final was up for grabs. Watch it here
St John's are looking to appoint an Operations Support Officer to support the Church Leader and Hub Manager in mobilising resources to advance the realisation of the church's vision, with a particular focus on communications and social media.
The Diocese wishes to recruit a Lay Training Officer who will work collaboratively as part of the lay training team.
