Ordinations of our new deacons will take place at Wakefield Cathedral at the end of this month with 15 new folk ready to work across the diocese. Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Revd Nick Baines will conduct ordination services at 11am and 3pm on Saturday, June 29 and here are introductions to all those preparing to serve, in their own words.

“Immense demand” means more than 1,500 lay people have been trained on a variety of courses in the past year, with further learning opportunities now available on the Digital Learning Platform. Revd Dr Hayley Matthews, Director of Lay Training, gave an overview of some of the main courses delivered by her team in a presentation to the June Synod.

On Saturday, September 7 the first Church of England’s Labs Learning roadshow will be taking place. Held at St George’s Church, Leeds, the day-long digital conference aims to inspire and equip Church of England churches to share Good News, grow people’s faith and bring more people to faith by harnessing digital and social media.

A prayer to use on United Nations Day in Support of Victims of Torture is being offered for use across the diocese by the new Rector of Bolton Abbey. Revd Nicholas Mercer is a trustee of the human rights charity Redress, which supports torture victims across the world. He has written both a prayer and a sermon which may be used on Wednesday, June 26, or the Sundays before or after.

Synod members are wanted by the Diocesan Advisory Committee to help with the care of our churches and buildings. It advises on reorderings, physical improvements and maintenance across the diocese and the DAC's Secretary, Lisa McIntyre and Chair, the Ven Peter Townley, Archdeacon of Pontefract, have invited anyone with an interest to get in touch.

Our Sri Lankan link dioceses have appealed for aid to support Christian victims of the Easter bomb attacks which claimed 235 lives. The Sri Lankan government has now named the terror group National Thowheed Jamath as being behind the atrocity, which destroyed churches and luxury hotels on the island.

Members of the Bradford Cathedral team are getting ready for this
Saturday’s Centenary Festival
, showing off the posters for the day in front of the arts exhibition exploring the Cathedral’s history, alongside an example of a wool sack which was used to protect the Cathedral during the ‘Battle of the Steeple’, which will be explored during the day.

Bishop of Huddersfield, the Rt Revd Jonathan Gibbs will
preach on the subject of faith in unsettled international times when he visits Kirchentag in Dortmund
, later this month. He is co-chair of the Meissen Commission which links the Church of England with the German Evangelical Church and will speak at a service organised by the Commission on Saturday, June 22.

learning how to make the most of digital communications
as part of a Church of England drive to support and encourage the church to make the most of online platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and A Church Near You.

Fearless curate Abbie Palmer has raised nearly £1,700 from her abseiling exploits at Ripon Cathedral
and the money is still coming in. Revd Abbie, with the back-up support of Bishop Helen-Ann' Hartley's teddy bear, was one of some 100 people who lowered themselves down the cathedrals south west tower to raise cash for good causes.

The fledged offspring of Wakefield Cathedral's peregrines are preparing to take to the air
, say local experts. The falcons' nest high on the spire has been filmed, photographed and monitored by local ornithologists and nature watchers since it was installed in 2015. The fastest birds of prey were frequent visitors to the spire, but only bred there after the box arrived.

A new book capturing memories and stories of life in Menston and Wharedale during the First World War will be launched at St Mary's church at the end of the month.
'ECHOES OF WAR: Mensto
n Reflects on the Great War'
is a record of Menston village’s four-year commemorations of the recent Centenary of the terrible conflict. The launch will take place at 7.30pm in Menston Parish Church on Friday, June 28.
