Bible Study
“Exploring of our Christian Roots; Growing our Christian Lives”
Wednesdays
10:00 am – 11:30 am, via zoom
Wednesday morning Bible Study is changing its name to reflect its current studies. While we have been reading scripture, we are using other sources to understand the Bible and some of the traditions of the church. To more accurately reflect our work, we are re-labeling from Bible Study to “Exploring of our Christian Roots; Growing our Christian Lives.”
This program uses the three cornerstones of our faith: scripture, tradition, reason. When we were just reading the Bible, we often found the stories incompatible with the world as we know it.
We have returned to Marcus Borg in our current reading of “The Heart of Christianity – Rediscovering a Life of Faith.” In this Borg is helping us see how the 21st Century world view can be compatible with belief in God and with seeking a spiritual life.
The Episcopal Church defines Scripture, tradition and reason as the cornerstones of our faith (https://www.epicenter.org/the-episcopal-faith/episcopal-faith/scripture-tradition-and-reason/). These are often described as the legs of a stool. A three legged stool may not have a level seat, but it won’t rock.
What our group is doing is strengthening our appreciation of Scripture and tradition when our reason was telling us “that makes no sense.” The effect is to make the seat more level without letting our faith be rocked.
We welcome new members and hope you will join us for our readings and discussions.
