Dr. John Button Scholarship 2024 Winners Announced

The Dr. John Button's Scholarship was created to provide financial support to Canadian Key Club and Circle K members who are registered in post-secondary medical programs. 

Debbie Button announced Melanie Groen, (Ridgetown) and Hasan Ghafoor, (Windsor) will each receive $5000 for their medical studies.

Kiwanis Club of Sarnia-Lambton Golden K Builders Clubs Plant Mini-Forests



Three Builders Clubs sponsored by The Kiwanis Club of Sarnia-Lambton Golden K planted mini-forests in their school yards in May. London Road Public School and Queen Elizabeth II Public School added to the mini-forests they initiated in May 2023, and High Park Public School planted their first mini-forest.



The planting projects were facilitated by retired local landscaper, Mike Smalls, and were funded through the generosity of Enbridge Pipelines Inc.  

Builders Club members not only learned how to plant trees and bushes but were also treated to presentations by Mike Smalls on Biodiversity and the importance of planting native plants prior to the installation of the mini-forests.

With donations from the Westfort - Thunder Bay Kiwanis Club, the Fort Francis Kiwanis Club and the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada, fourteen high school students from Thunder Bay and Fort Francis in northwest Ontario, were able to participate in the program including the on-site residential component in Calgary, with other students from across Alberta.

Students in the Seeds Connection Program organized a multicultural fashion show demonstrating the impact of the Program on student attitudes towards diversity, inclusion and anti-racism.

Congratulations to Community Outreach and Environmental Grants Winners

Outreach and Environmental Grant Review

We have reviewed and determined which applications to support. We received a total of 27 applications and awarded $49,450 in grants to 22 clubs. The Committee was comprised of Roger Hamel, Ann Penner, Donna Kelso, Kelly Powell and Greg Holland, all directors of the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada.

Overall, the committee was impressed with many of the projects submitted and feel that the introduction of these two new grants was a success. There was good diversity in the project requests. As these grants are new and developing our criteria is a work in progress, we would like to explain the criteria we were looking for in the successful applications.

Criteria

One of the purposes behind initiating these new grants was to generate Kiwanis led programs and reward the clubs for taking the initiative to lead. The applicants that showed a strong club lead, along with strong club member participation rose to the top. Diverse and originality of the programs intrigued us, along with community impact, Kiwanis recognition and youth support.

We had several applications where the club was making a donation to another organization and looking for us to match that donation. We referred to these as cheque writing proposals and they were scored lower. Many of the programs being supported were very good causes but that was not the intent of this grant program

Follow-up



To the successful applications, congratulations. We will be looking for proof of your financial contribution prior to committing our funds, as these were matching grants. As per the literature, before May 31, 2025, we expect a short report, pictures etc. on the results of your program.

To those that were not successful or received much lower than what they applied for, start looking for a new project of your own, with strong member participation. The funds available for these grants are limited, so not everyone will be successful.

Le club des Bâtisseurs du Club Kiwanis de Sarnia-Lambton Golden K - Plantez des mini-forêts

Trois clubs de Bâtisseurs parrainés par le Club Kiwanis de Sarnia-Lambton Golden K ont planté des mini-forêts dans leur cour d'école en mai. L'école publique London Road et l'école publique Queen Elizabeth II ont ajouté aux mini-forêts qu'elles ont commencées en mai 2023, et l'école publique High Park a planté sa première mini-forêt.



Les projets de plantation ont été facilités par Mike Smalls, paysagiste local à la retraite, et ont été financés grâce à la générosité d'Enbridge Pipelines Inc.

Les membres du club de Bâtisseurs ont non seulement appris à planter des arbres et des arbustes, mais ont également eu droit à des présentations de Mike Smalls sur la biodiversité et l'importance de planter des plantes indigènes avant l'installation des mini-forêts.

Révision des subventions de sensibilisation et d'environnement

Nous avons examiné et déterminé les demandes qui ont été soumises. Nous avons reçu un total de 27 demandes et accordé 49 450 $ en subventions à 22 clubs. Le Comité était composé de Roger Hamel, Ann Penner, Donna Kelso, Kelly Powell et Greg Holland, tous administrateurs de la Fondation canadienne du Kiwanis.

Dans l'ensemble, le comité a été impressionné par un bon nombre des projets soumis et estime que l'introduction de ces deux nouvelles subventions a été un succès. Il y avait une grande diversité dans les demandes de projet. Étant donné que ces subventions sont nouvelles et que l'élaboration de nos critères est un travail en cours, nous aimerions expliquer les critères que nous recherchions dans les demandes retenues.

Critères



L'un des objectifs du lancement de ces nouvelles subventions était de générer des programmes dirigés par le Kiwanis et de récompenser les clubs pour leur initiative. Les candidats qui ont montré une forte avance du club, ainsi qu'une forte participation des membres du club se sont hissés au sommet. La diversité et l'originalité des programmes nous ont intrigués, ainsi que l'impact communautaire, la reconnaissance du Kiwanis et le soutien des jeunes.

Nous avons eu plusieurs soumissions où le club faisait un don à une autre organisation et souhaitait que nous égalions ce don. Nous les avons appelées ‘propositions de rédaction de chèques’ et elles ont été rejetées. Bon nombre des programmes appuyés étaient de très bonnes causes, mais ce n'était pas l'intention de ce programme.

Suivi

Félicitations aux candidatures retenues. Nous attendrons une preuve de votre contribution financière avant d'engager nos fonds, car il s'agissait de subventions de appariées Selon la description des programmes proposés, nous nous attendons à recevoir un court rapport, des photos, etc. sur les résultats de votre programme avant le 31 mai 2025,

À ceux qui n'ont pas été retenus ou qui n'ont pas reçu la subvention à laquelle ils s’attendaient, recherchez un projet qui impliquera une forte participation des membres. Les fonds disponibles pour ces subventions étant limités, tous les projets ne pourront être retenus.
