Volunteer Highlight - Darcy Exley

We are so grateful to have Darcy's support here at Birthday Dreams. She is truly making a difference in the lives of homeless children and getting to see first hand the fulfillment in bringing a smile to a homeless child's face.

Darcy started volunteering for BD in January of this year. She was fortunate enough to take an early retirement from Boeing and after 31 years of the corporate world wanted to be involved in something where she felt like she could make a difference. Darcy wanted to give back to the community and helping kids has always been something that meant a lot to her. Being able to put a smile on a child’s face and some joy in their hearts is rewarding. Birthday Dreams welcomes our new Executive Assistant, Becky Nickels. Becky has a long history of volunteering in the community, with the Renton Regional Community Foundation, the Renton Kiwanis Clothes Bank, and Center For Hope to name three. She also has great skills, having been the Executive Assistant to both Renton School District Superintendents Dr. Gary Kohlwes and Dr. Dolores Gibbons. We are very lucky to have her on our team!

The Crane Fund for Women and Children generously provided Birthday Dreams with a $3,000 grant. Thank you to the Crane Co. and employee Alicia Kelly who recommended Birthday Dreams. The check was presented at the Crane Co.'s Annual Tea Party on July 24, where many local non-profits were recognized. Birthday Dreams was honored to one.

T o the right, Suzanne Schumacher, Crane Co.'s Director of Site Operations and the keynote speaker, presents the check to co-founders Chris Spahn and Shannon Avery.

We had the opportunity to meet some amazing kids recently. These kids attended a one week camp where they served with several different non-profit organizations, making a difference around the Greater Seattle area. Camp Kindness Counts' mission is "empowering, inspiring, and connecting kids with kindness".

Birthday Dreams saw the effects of their kindness as the kids decorated and filled 350 goody bags with toys and candy this summer. Besides decorating the bags with stickers and glitter, they added inspirational and uplifting messages on the goody bags. Several brought donations as well. Mateo, pictured above to the right, brought LEGO's. When asked why, he said " Every kid on earth deserves an awesome day at least once a year." Well said!

What a fun event! We are so grateful to all who come out to support us at The Great Inflatable Race.
