The Field of Battle - the Aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg

“We were not meant to see such things” were the words of a Gettysburg civilian following the days after the battle. The aftermath of a Civil War battle is often overlooked or totally forgotten when reflecting on the American Civil War.

When the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac came into Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in July of 1863, they swept in like a whirlwind. And a thunderous storm followed for 3 days. And that quick, they were gone leaving in their aftermath a massive wake of destruction and carnage that had never been seen before. Have you ever thought about it? If you focus on it, you might just imagine for a moment…. What would it have looked like?

Amazingly enough, with all of the accounts that were done, and books that had been written about the battle, there had never been a major study to deal with that aftermath of the battle of Gettysburg. With over 50,000 killed and wounded, and that was just the beginning. Historical reenactor, lecturer and tour guide Michael Jesberger will explore this macabre tale of the American Civil War.

Thursday, March 9 at 6:00 pm

Help Bring Back the Newspapers!

You may have noticed that Bosler is no longer carrying the print editions of The New York Times, the Washington Post, or the Wall Street Journal. We regret not having these available for the public to access. However, we had to make the difficult decision to discontinue these papers recently, due to the high cost of the subscriptions.

As a library, Bosler usually orders newspaper subscriptions through a service with Hudson News Distributors. Last year, Bosler was charged $4,124.10 for the subscriptions to the Times, Post, and Journal. We used to also carry other large city papers, such as the Philadelphia Enquirer and the Boston Globe, but had to cut back due to rising costs.

Right now, the only print newspapers Bosler is carrying are the Carlisle Sentinel and the Harrisburg Patriot-News. With the Sentinel no longer offering morning delivery service, however, patrons must wait until it is delivered with the mail each day (or Monday for the Sunday edition).

Thankfully, you can always access the local newspapers, as well as some other news sources via our online databases on our website with your library card number. Unfortunately, the Times, Post, and Journal are not part of the online Newsbank.

In looking into other ways to get these papers, we found we can get the New York Times delivered for $400 (M-F only) or $620 (daily) for a special one-year rate. The Wall Street Journal is currently offering a one-year for $233.99 (M-F). Unfortunately, the Washington Post does not deliver in our area.

Do you think it’s important that Bosler, as the public library of the Carlisle area, provide access to these newspapers? If so, we are looking for donors who would like to pitch in to Adopt a Newspaper.

Please contact Molly Shane, CFRE, Development Officer, at mshane@cumberlandcountylibraries.org or 717-609-2327 for more information about how you can help. If you can cover the cost of a full-year subscription (or go in with a friend on one), we will offer to recognize your support in a variety of ways.

Amazon Smile to End this Month

Bosler Memorial Library recently received notice that AmazonSmile will be discontinued on February 20, 2023. Bosler is grateful for the $1,340 in donations we received from AmazonSmile since 2017, when we began encouraging library donors and patrons to shop on Amazon through AmazonSmile to benefit Bosler Library. Thank you!

According to the notice Bosler received from Amazon, the company launched AmazonSmile in 2013 to make it easier for customers to support their favorite charities. However, with so many eligible organizations—more than 1 million globally—AmazonSmile’s ability to have an impact was often spread too thin.

Amazon’s announcement said the company will keep supporting thousands of charities across the U.S. in other ways, and focus on the areas they believe can help create an even greater impact.
