Surface Water Solutions quarterly newsletter | December 2021
What's done in '21?
Despite its challenges, 2021 was a fantastic year in terms of advances in the water sector, as demonstrated in our final webinar of the year that covered some impressive new tech for flood modelling.

Free Webinars. We launched our 2021 free webinar series with the HEC-RAS developers stepping us through the new features in the latest version. Over the course of the year, we covered a very wide range of topics, including riprap sizing, pumped storage hydropower, GLOFs, PMFs, climate change, geomorphology, HEC-HMS, fish passage, bridge scour, rating curves, and more. View the complete list of previous webinars here.

HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS training. We also updated all of our HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS courses to cover the new features in the latest releases. The HEC-RAS training series includes essentials for 1D and 2D modelling along with optional modules for structures, sediment transport, dam breach, and more. The HEC-HMS course steps through the new GIS tools, gridded rainfall, the application of ARR pattern, and other powerful new capabilities. View the complete list of available courses here, including Python, QGIS, and more.
ARR Course. When the Australian Water School was relaunched under its new banner last year, we kicked it off with a webinar covering Australian Rainfall and Runoff. What started out as a single webinar turned into a comprehensive series of courses covering each of the ARR books. Although that live course series sold out, the recorded version is now available to all who wish to attend on-demand. Click here for registration links and content details.
What's new in '22?
Free Webinars. Meet Olympic kayakers-turned hydraulic modellers as we kick off our 2022 webinar series with some fun, including surf waves, whitewater parks, waterslides, and more. Other topics include humanitarian water projects, the Great Barrier Reef, floodway design, river restoration, and more. View the complete list of upcoming webinars here.

First principles. We're also proud to announce the launch of our new course series covering the basic fundamentals of hydrology and hydraulics. We have assembled a team of expert instructors to present an interactive master class covering the essential background principles that are needed for practitioners running rainfall-runoff and flood models. Each module includes hands-on workshop exercises. Registration and content details are available here. The series kicks off with two free webinars covering the Froude and Courant Numbers. Whether you're new to the field or just looking for a refresher, we're sure this course will offer some practical insights into the behaviour of water.
