Home care failure forced local mother to give up daughter's custody

A Sudbury-area mother, unable to care for her sick child, gave her daughter to Children’s Aid this month. Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas said it was an example of how children with special needs are not getting the level of health care they need.

"This is not right, this is not my Ontario. These kids, these families need and deserve care in Northern Ontario, in Sudbury. It is very sad to see the damages done by this government to our public not for profit care system and the horrible consequences it has on high-level special needs children and their families," said Gélinas.

Delivering Solutions: An Action Plan for Sustaining Rural Birthing in Northern Ontario

Today, only nine rural hospital sites supported by approximately 35 rural family physicians are providing labour and delivery services to the 50,000 rural Northern Ontarians of childbearing age.

Delivering Solutions: An Action Plan for Sustaining Rural Birthing in Northern Ontario, presents a plan to address the decline of rural labour and delivery services and support the sustainability of the few programs that remain operational.

“We fully endorse Ontario’s stated goal of ‘...giving you the right care in the right place, providing faster access to services, and growing our health care workforce…’”, says Dr. Eliseo Orrantia, a co-author of the report and a rural generalist physician in Marathon, ON. “Yet, as rural labour and delivery programs continue to close across Northern Ontario, pregnant persons face longer travel times to access care, resulting in worse health outcomes and substantial costs for both patients and the healthcare system.”

Mortality Following Childbirth in Ontario

BORN Ontario is pleased to share a new publication outlining the number and causes of maternal* mortality associated with hospital births in Ontario over a 20-year period. As a registry, BORN’s role is to facilitate and improve care, and the first step towards prevention and better care/outcomes is improving our understanding of the issues and this study raises profile of areas of opportunity.

* We acknowledge that the term “maternal” is not fully inclusive, though it is widely used in published literature to describe pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care. When we use “maternal,” we are referring to all birthing individuals and gestational carriers, recognizing that this language does not reflect everyone’s identity.
