News in the North

NMCN Now Accepting Expression of Interests to Join the Steering and Child & Youth Committees

The NMCN is seeking new members to join the Steering Committee and Child & Youth Committee. Have the opportunity to collaborate with other health professionals across the North to make an impact on maternal and child care. Applications will be accepted until February 28th, 2025.

Steering Committee

  • Provides leadership and oversight to the strategic directions of the NMCN.
  • Works closely with provincial and regional entities, including but not limited to, the Ministry of Health, Provincial Council of Maternal and Children’s Health, Ontario Health North, Better Outcomes Registry & Network Ontario, regional networks, and other partners in order to fulfil the NMCN mandate.
  • Meeting frequency – Monthly


Seeking: Public Health representation, Obstetric and Family Medicine, Developmental and Social Services.

Child & Youth Committee

  • A standing committee that provides oversight to the child and youth portfolio of the network.
  • Identify and advocate for the health needs of the child and youth population in the North.
  • Collate and disseminate evidence-based practice guidelines and standards to inform the delivery of equitable, high quality pediatric care.
  • Meeting frequency – Monthly


Seeking: Public Health representation, Pediatric and Family Medicine, and representation from small/rural hospitals.

Behind ER doors: How this northeastern Ontario hospital is using non-financial incentives to recruit doctors

While rural northeastern Ontario hospitals compete financially for visiting temporary doctors to keep their emergency rooms open, some are casting about for other ways to ease the burden on local doctors to prevent burnout.


At the two-site Manitoulin Health Centre in Little Current and Mindemoya, where each location is operating with half the provincially mandated number of local doctors, president and CEO Paula Fields admits the system is fragile. Read more >

Advances in Labour and Risk Management (ALARM)


April 14th & 15th, 2025 | Sault Ste. Marie, ON

ALARM (Advances in Labour and Risk Management) was developed by obstetricians/gynecologists, family physicians, midwives and nurses, who jointly continue to maintain and teach the course. Backed by the SOGC, the ALARM course arose out of our work to improve the care provided to women, babies, and families during pregnancy, labour, and postpartum.

Northern Ontario Pediatric Conference
