News in the North

Welcoming new staff to the NMCN

The NMCN is thrilled to welcome three new members to our team! Laurie, Erin, and Cassandra bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion to their roles. We’re excited to have them on board and look forward to the great work we’ll accomplish together!

Laurie Eastman

Regional Pediatric Lead

Laurie is the Regional Pediatric Lead with the Northern Maternal Child Network with 25 years experience as Registered Nurse working in acute care. Laurie’s unique nursing portfolio includes 10 years of Adult Critical Care nursing and 10 years of NICU and Pediatric nursing. Since October 2022, Laurie has developed and delivered pediatric surge and critical care education. Recently joining the NMCN in November 2024, Laurie considers herself a fierce patient advocate and is passionate about the safety and quality of pediatric care. She looks forward to using her vast nursing knowledge to provide quality pediatric education to the North.

Erin Lee Heise

Regional Perinatal Lead

Erin is the Regional Perinatal Lead for the Northern Maternal Child Network. She brings over five years of experience as a Registered Nurse specializing in obstetrics and newborn care, with a strong background in quality improvement and patient-centered initiatives. Erin is passionate about enhancing maternal and newborn health outcomes through evidence-based practices and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Laurentian University, graduating with honors. Erin is dedicated to advancing perinatal care in Northern Ontario by fostering innovation and ensuring culturally sensitive, empathetic care for all patients.

Cassandra Watters

Administrative Secretary

Cassandra is the Administrative Secretary for the Northern Maternal Child Network. Before joining the Network in September of 2024, Cassandra worked in healthcare philanthropy and communications for a local hospital in Northern Ontario, helping to raise funds to advance patient care in the North. Cassandra holds a Bachelors of Business Administration from Trent University, and is currently pursuing a Masters of Business degree at Laurentian University. She is eager to support the work of the NMCN to enhance care for patients across Northern Ontario.

Mycoplasma Pneumoniae

In response to the rising cases of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in Ontario, PHO has released a new report: Mycoplasma pneumoniae Testing in Ontario. This resource summarizes Mycoplasma Pneumoniae testing data performed at PHO from January 1 to November 15, 2024. Please note that PHO does not perform all testing for Mycoplasma pneumoniae in Ontario, therefore data may not be representative of Ontario overall.
