Kennel Connection 7 has been released!

We highly suggest that you demo KC7 as there are many new features that we recommend you test out and learn before going live.  You can demo KC7 with your own database and run it side by side with Kennel Connection 6 to see the differences and new features.   If you decide to demo KC7, remind all staff that they must enter all data into Kennel Connection 6 so that nothing is lost when upgrading later.

Email Estimates to emails not stored on file

You can now enter an email address to send an estimate to without having to store that email on file.  For example, let's say your client's dad will be paying for this stay.  You can now enter his email address to send the estimate to without having to save his address to the client's record.

The client's email will be populated in the field.  You can then enter another email to send to, using a comma to separate the addresses.

WEBROOT and Kennel Connection

We'd like to make you aware of an issue with WEBROOT security software and Kennel Connection 7* that some clients have experienced.  When WEBROOT scans the computer, it is quarantining some Kennel Connection files that are required for the software to function.  If you are running the WEBROOT security software and your Kennel Connection software either won't start at all or displays an error message upon startup, you will need to release the Kennel Connection files from WEBROOT's quarantine.  Click here for an article with instructions.

According to WEBROOT, once a file is restored from quarantine, it should not be removed again.  If it does get removed again, contact WEBROOT for support.

Some precautions you can take to help avoid these issues are:

1.  Before installing the Kennel Connection software or installing any KC updates on your computers, you should disable the WEBROOT software or any antivirus (AV) software you have running.  Leaving the AV software running during installs can cause necessary files to not get placed or registered.  Once installed, add any necessary exceptions (see #2 for more information) and re-enable your AV software.

2.  Add the KC7.exe file and the entire KC7 folder to the list of WEBROOT or any antivirus software exceptions.  Adding files and folders to exceptions will significantly reduce the amount of issues caused by AV interference.  Note that it also helps speed up the software.  Click here for directions for excluding files in WEBROOT.

In most cases the above will help.  From our experience with WEBROOT, It seems that after you restore the KC files from the quarantine back to their original locations, WEBROOT leaves the files alone.  However, if you continue to have issues with WEBROOT quarantining files, you will need to contact them for further support.

Be advised that it is important to run antivirus software to protect your computer.  However, at times, it needs to disabled for installs and/or updates that you know are safe.  There may also be times where it needs to be disabled or uninstalled for testing purposes only and then re-enabled or reinstalled right away.  If you have constant trouble with a certain antivirus product and cannot get help or get the issues resolved with that company, you may want to look into another.

* At present, the issues only seem to be affecting KC7 users because of the dll files it needs to function.  It's possible WEBROOT may also cause issues with Kennel Connection 6 but it's not as common.

Remember to backup your database!

You are responsible for backing up your database.  If you ever suffer a computer crash and are unable to pull any data from the machine, you will need to start from scratch unless you have a backup of the database.

We suggest you backup every day to an external hard drive.  It is important that you unplug the external drive once the backup is complete so that it is not infected if your computer gets a virus.  If you attach pictures or documents to pet/client records, or have clients sign the signature pad for receipts, you must also backup these folders.

Click here for directions.  If you have questions, please contact us at [email protected] or 1-888-486-4343 x 504.

We also offer an automatic backup service for SQL users for their database, pictures and documents folders.  Access users can sign up to backup their pictures and documents folders.  Click here to check out all the options.
Protect your computer from ransomware!

Attacks from ransomware are on the rise these days.  It is vitally important that you protect your computer and Kennel Connection from such attacks.  Make sure to backup your database everyday to an external hard drive.  Copy your Pix, KCDocs, Receipts folders to your external drive, if you use those.  Unplug the external drive when you are done so that it is not infected if your computer should get a virus.  Click here for full instructions.

Consult with your IT professional to discuss your best method of protection.  You can also click on this link to learn more:   http://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/opinions/the-why-and-how-of-ransomware/
