Update from Executive Director Aisha Baro
Life Science Cares Bay Area Makes an Impact
First, thank you to everyone who has contributed to our mission to address the impact of poverty and inequality on our neighbors in the Bay Area since we launched last year.
We are proud to report that in our first 18 months, Life Science Cares Bay Area has granted over $1.8M to 18 nonprofit partners, including ten new partners added this Spring. In 2022 thus far, we've organized in-person volunteer events engaging 316 volunteers for a total of 643 combined hours, creating 1100 women's care packages and vaccine goodie bags, and assisting with activities like zero-waste pantry prep. And this summer, we activated our first cohort of Project Onramp SF Bay interns, placing 23 interns into 14 life science companies.
With this new newsletter, you'll find regular updates on our progress, partner news, event announcements, and ways for you to help. Be sure to check out the volunteer opportunities listed below!

Corporate Partner Highlight: Gilead Sciences
Life Science Cares catalyzed Gilead Sciences, Genentech, and other partners into collective action to realize the Equity Express, a double-decker bus bringing key programs to remote farmworkers. Gilead was the primary donor.
“The Gilead Foundation envisions health prosperity for all,” said Kate Wilson, Executive Director of the Gilead Foundation. "Enabling access to healthcare and education for marginalized and traditionally excluded communities is at the core of what Gilead does every day to advance health equity.”

Volunteer Highlight: Exelixis
Life Science Cares is proud to partner with Exelixis, delivering new medicines to treat and defeat cancer, giving patients hope for the future. In March, we coordinated a volunteer event where 300 Exelixis staff made 1,000 vaccine goodie bags for GLIDE. They’ve committed to another 1,000 care packages for both GLIDE and La Clinica La Raza, respectively, this summer!

Project Onramp SF Bay Places 23 Interns
2022 saw the launch of Project Onramp in the Bay Area. We screened more than 50 students over a four-week period, hoping to meet our goal of placing 15 interns this summer. Not only did we meet our goal, we exceeded it! We placed 23 students from underrepresented communities across 14 Bay Area biotech companies in less than four months. Thanks to Global Blood Therapeutics for providing funding!

Jolayia Aldridge, USC student and LSC Project Onramp intern
Success Story: Jolayia Aldridge
Peninsula Bridge Executive Director Randi Shafton shared with us an inspiring story about one of her mentees, Jolayia Aldridge:
"Jolayia is a USC student and a summer intern at Denali. She and I had dinner last week and she shared that she is over the moon at her internship. Jolayia is helping to diversify their talent, and will be brainstorming with Peninsula Bridge on the best strategies and practices for recruiting diverse employees. (I loved this!) She also mentioned that Denali has the most exquisite Espresso Machine, and she invited me for coffee.
So deeply inspiring! And, it's all because of you, your commitment, advocacy and our wonderful partnership. I can't thank you enough!"

Proceeds from the Traverse support our nonprofit partners.
Timmerman Traverse
In 2021, biotech journalist and avid mountain climber Luke Timmerman led a group of 20 biotech executives over seven peaks of the White Mountains in NH (23 miles) in support of Life Science Cares. Participants raised at least $25,000 each, totaling $735,000 for LSC Boston.
This year, Luke is organizing climbers representing each of the four LSC affiliate sites – Boston, Philadelphia, San Diego, and the SF Bay Area. An intrepid group will hike the Timmerman Traverse September 12-14 in support of our mission.
