Little vetoes property tax bill over election date, transportation bonds

“House Bill 292 is a hodgepodge of policy items,” Gov. Brad Little wrote in his Monday veto letter, specifically calling out “significant impacts on election dates, public defense funding, online sales tax collections, local government sales tax distributions, and funding for transportation.”

House rejects Senate compromise, votes to override

On Tuesday, the House shot down a proposal that the Senate pushed out immediately after the veto which would have restored the March school bond and levy election date, and dealt with sales taxes in a simpler way.

House bill to fix veto issues may defund public defense

Reporting by Idaho Reports uncovered late on Tuesday that a trailer bill introduced by the House to address some of Little's fiscal concerns might have neglected to provide funding to counties for public defense in the upcoming fiscal year.

Senate yet to take up veto response; JFAC could address public defense funding question

The joint budget committee had already passed an appropriation to help establish the Office of the State Public Defender. On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate sent the appropriation bill back to the Senate Finance Committee.

Labrador, IDHW spar over deleted phone data

Attorney General Raúl Labrador is accusing the Department of Health and Welfare of improperly deleting data from a phone issued to a former deputy attorney general. The department acknowledges it wiped the device, but says it did nothing wrong.

New abortion bill would clarify ‘life of the mother’

The bill states that if a physician determines “in his good faith medical judgement” that the abortion is necessary to prevent the woman’s death, an abortion may be induced. The bill would remove the affirmative defense provision and instead lists exemptions to the law that are non-criminal abortion.
