Meeting House
What's on this month

Friday 11 August
£20 (pre-show supper £14 at 7pm, must be booked in advance)

The feel-good factor comes to Ilminster Arts Centre on Friday 11 August with a performance by the hugely popular Pete Allen Traditional Jazz Band.

Pete Allen first appeared at the Arts Centre three years ago, and he returns in the company of his band, which is one of the best-known 'trad' bands in the country.

One of Europe's most talented
and exciting exponents of the clarinet, Pete Allen first formed his band in October 1978, and since then it has made numerous appearances on television and radio as well as performing at prestigious jazz festivals and clubs throughout the UK and abroad.  Along the way the band has acquired legions of enthusiastic fans and among the countless wedding receptions and birthday parties at which the band has performed over the years can be included a number of functions for Sir Ian Botham.

The band are renowned for their exciting and entertaining repertoire of happy traditional jazz. It's a sound that everyone can enjoy and understand being a combination of well-played music with professional presentation.
The concert at Ilminster Arts Centre is a must not only for traditional jazz fans but also for anyone who enjoys feel good, uplifting music being performed live in an intimate, low key venue.

To book your tickets please contact the Box Office on 01460 54973.

Friday 25 August
£15 (pre-show supper £14 at 7pm, must be booked in advance)

Ilminster Arts Centre might be a small venue but it has a reputation for attracting some big n ames, particularly when it comes to jazz.  The concert on Friday 25 August is no exception, as it features two of the biggest names in modern mainstream jazz: saxophonist Alan Barnes and piano maestro Dave Newton.

Both musicians have played before several times at the Arts Centre but this duo combination promises to be especially memorable. Alan Barnes and Dave Newton between them have collected numerous jazz awards and are among the most respected and admired musicians in their field.

Alan Barnes has been a key figure on the British jazz scene since the late 1970s. His strong tone, assured improvisations and imaginative arranging technique have marked him out as one of the country's top players.  Alan has broadcast regularly with the BBC Big Band and Radio Orchestra and has played on film and television soundtracks and jingles.  He has twice been awarded the prestigious BBC Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year award.

Dave Newton is, in Matt Skelton's words, 'one of our nation's treasured pianists'.

Scottish-born and educated at the Leeds College of Music, Newton's recording career had begun in 1985 with Buddy De Franco and Martin Taylor and his first solo album was released in 1988.  He's been the accompanist of choice for vocal royalty for years, and it's easy to hear why: Newton's musical responsiveness is as impressive as his re-harmonization and arranging skills at the piano. Newton has been voted 'Best Jazz Pianist' in the British Jazz Awards for the thirteenth time in 2014 and was made a Fellow of Leeds College of Music in 2003.

This is likely to be a sell-out performance so advance booking is highly recommended.   There are also a limited number of places for the pre-show supper, which is served at 7pm at an additional cost of £14 per head. To book please contact the Box Office on 01460 54973.

The Ilminster Annual Open is a popular art competition that is open to professional and amateur artists, who submit their work to be appraised by a judging panel.  The resulting month-long exhibition at the Arts Centre is a unique showcase of art works ina variety of media by well-known names as well as by emerging artists.
The exhibition is greatly enjoyed by local visitors, as well as those travelling to and from holiday destinations.  Many tourists make a point of stopping off at the Arts Centre specifically to see the exhibition, as well as, of course, enjoy the delicious homemade food served in the café!

The event, which is sponsored by Branston of Seavington, has become a byword for quality and creativity.  Commenting on her experience of the exhibition, last year's overall winner, Jane Burden, said "The Ilminster Open is a wonderful opportunity for artists to show their work to a wide audience and benefit from one of their generous prizes.  I'm very glad I entered my work!"

Artists taking part are competing for £850 in prize money and the chance to take part in a prizewinners' exhibition at the Arts Centre in 2018. There is also a 'people's prize' in which visitors to the exhibition can vote to award the artist they think should win.
