The Editor

The last Sunday in June saw the flags come down for the official end of Ilminster Midsummer Experience 2016.   It was another great event enjoyed by thousands of people and, following on from the inaugural Ilminster Literary Festival, completed a fun-packed June for the Town.

One of the highlights of the Flag Festival was the new flag for the Town Council which had invited children from Greenfylde School to submit a design.  The competition had been won by Chloe Mattravers from Greenfylde School, who is pictured here in front of the flag with Ilminster Mayor Val Keitch, John Pallister from the Ilminster Lights Committee who put up and take down the flags, and Mike Fry-Foley from Experience Ilminster CIC who organise the Ilminster Midsummer Experience including the Flag Festival.

What's on in July 2016
Monday 4th July to Saturday 30th July

Some centuries before the Encyclopaedia, there was the Bestiary; an illustrated compendium of Beasts. Inspired by this cataloguing of creatures and curiosities, Nancy Farmer has illustrated a number of the fanciful and fantastic beings to be found in Somerset. In keeping with the tradition of the Medievalists, she has favoured imagination over research and has made a lot of them up. Pollarded dryads, rhyne maidens, the flying pigs of High Ham, a fairy queen in her barge, a number of irritated swans and many other curiosities people this very local landscape.

Supporting these fanciful visions will be Nancy's growing collection of 'drawings
from memory', these subjects are real, for a change. Swimmers slipping gleefully into lakes in January, or swimming in the choppy and muddy waters of the Bristol Channel may be mistaken for illusion, but they are real creatures of the West
Country, albeit a hardy breed.
Monday 1st August to Friday 26th August
Sponsored by Branstons of Seavington

Our annual open competition grows in popularity year on year, attracting work of outstanding quality by a diverse range of talented West Country artists.

Preparing work for this exhibition is a wonderful goal to aim for if you are a practising artist, and every year the standard of entries just gets better and better! The exhibition itself attracts visitors from near and far - to get your work on the Arts Centre walls is to guarantee it a wide, and highly appreciative, audience.

If you would like to take part in this wonderful event, there is still time - entry forms are available to download HERE, or collect one from the Arts Centre

Friday 8th July 8:00 PMJAZZ - The Matt Carter Quartet with Martin Dale
(pre-show supper at 7:00pm)
Tickets £12 (£25 including pre-show supper) can be booked on 01460 54973
Matt Carter is a young, very young, piano player from Exeter, who has gained a notable reputation since leaving school.

Four or five years ago he was here in Ilminster doing his school "work experience", with Craig Milverton; whilst Craig was setting up, Matt doodled on our piano.  For a 16 year old lad he was astonishing.

Since then he has played with the best, such as Alan Barnes, Greg Abate and Brandon Allen.  Here he is with us again, this time playing a gig with own quartet plus Martin Dale, the top Southwest sax player.

Friday 22nd July 8:00 PMJAZZ - GERSHWIN TRIBUTE
(pre-show supper at 7:00pm)
Tickets £16 (£29 including pre-show supper) can be booked on 01460 54973
The lovely Laura Collins is a wonderful singer who will charm us all. She has trained with the top vocalists in the UK, Tina May, Norma Winstone, Lee Gibson and Anita Wardell, and sings with the best of our UK jazz greats such as Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams Jean Toussaint and Dick Pearce. Here she will be accompanied by Craig Milverton's trio plus guitarist Nigel Price, both of whom are regular visitors to the Arts Centre.  This will be a programme of well known tunes from the Gershwin Brothers Songbook.
