Connect with Photography, Tuesday 18th - an evening with Nigel Hicks

Nigel is a highly experienced professional photographer who has been in the business for over 20 years. Though based in south Devon, his work has taken him all over the world, shooting for a range of clients, most especially publishers and travel companies. These days he shoots extensively for National Geographic Creative, the image library and publishing division of the USA's prestigious National Geographic Society, and he is a Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP).

He also runs his own photography courses, holding a programme of one-day workshops across the southwest each year, as well as one or two overseas tours annually. His latest book, Wild Southwest, about the landscapes and wildlife of southwest England, is coming out right now, published by Aquaterra Publishing, his own publishing company.

Although during his talk Nigel will cover his work and approach to photography in general, he will use the photography in  Wild Southwest as the main set of examples, describing the work involved in pulling this book together.
You can find out more by visiting his website at www.nigelhicks.com and do join at 7.30pm on the 18th! Free Event.

Victorian Evening Update

Now that Ilminster Carnival is over, the next big event in the town calendar is the Victorian Night and Christmas lights switch-on on Friday 18th November. Put it in your diary now!  This year it will be bigger than ever with a larger Fun Fair in East Street.

Another big event is the Lantern Parade and this year we are expecting some huge lanterns. To make a success of this event and to keep it safe, we need to enlarge the number of volunteers acting as marshals.  If you are prepared to offer your time from 6.00pm to about 9.00pm on the night you would be very welcome.  Please get in touch with Mike Fry-Foley on
  michael@malherbie.co.uk for further information.

Spotlight On etyres

etyres - The Most Convenient Way To Buy New Tyres In Ilminster

Buying tyres and having them fitted in Ilminster and the surrounding areas is now easier, more convenient and cheaper, thanks to a father and son team.

Ian and Elliot Kerr have launched etyres Ilminster, a mobile tyre fitting service, to cover the town and the surrounding areas, including Taunton, Chard, Langport, Bishop's Lydeard and Bruton in the north to Beaminster and Axminster in the south, Sturminster Newton in the east to Uffculme and Wiveliscombe in the west.

"Nobody looks forward to buying new tyres, they are usually an unwanted and unexpected expense," Ian explained.  "But they are a necessity, not a luxury and of course, we rely on our vehicles so much in this area, not least because many parts are rural and public transport is not always an easy option.

"This also means motorists may have to drive for many miles to get their new tyres fitted at a traditional garage or tyre depot, but our mobile tyre fitting service aims to take the time and hassle out of buying new tyres, because we come to your home or work to fit them at your convenience.

"And as well as saving our customers time and hassle, our service is also focused on offering excellent value for money.  Unlike garages and tyre depots we have low overheads, so our customers benefit from lower prices.

Endorsed by the consumer champion Which? and accepted onto its widely-respected Trusted Trader scheme, etyres also supply and fit a wide range of batteries to suit all vehicles and budgets. "We are just coming into autumn," Ian continued "when the days are getting shorter and colder and our vehicle batteries will soon be subjected to heavy use powering the lights, heaters, windscreen blowers, etc.

"If you have a flat battery, what do you do?  How can you get your car - which won't start because of a flat battery - to a garage to have a new battery fitted? No problem!  Now all you have to do is contact etyres and we will bring the battery to you and fit it on your doorstep."

Ian and Elliot put a lot of thought into choosing a joint business venture and in times of economic uncertainty they wanted to be confident they were making the right choice.  Ian said: "We are investing in our future and so this was a big decision for both of us.

"etyres ticked all the boxes," Ian went on.  "These days we all value good service, keen prices and convenience, whether we are having our shopping delivered to our front door or are looking for a trustworthy plumber.  We share these values and goals and now we want our customers to reap the benefit of our service in their area."

Jon England   Gordon Field   Frances Harrison
Fiona Hingston   Stefan Jenning
Lucy Lean   Jo Minoprio

An exhibition of artworks based on artists' responses to a favourite, or found tree.  The starting point for each artist was to "find a tree" and spend some time with it.  The artists, who all work in a variety of different media and styles, were then invited to create an individual work, or series of works that show different aspects of the tree, such as seasonal change.

Jabbo Smith and his Rhythm Aces, recorded 22 tracks in 1929, and at that time became a rival to the brilliance of Louis Armstrong's Hot Five, but Jabbo then subsided into obscurity. The Jabbo Five was formed in 2010 to recreate the sound and style of those original recordings. Featuring leader Dave Martin, together with Nick White, Mike Lancaster, Pete Miller and Phil Blandford, the band members have in the past played in many of the best known groups of the "Trad" era.  A 'must' for our Vintage Jazz audience!

Multi award winner Dave Newton is here at the Arts Centre again, this time with two more London based players with the very best of reputations.  Tenor sax player Alex Garnett and guitarist Nigel Price have both visited us several times before and have greatly impressed us with every performance. Both are younger than our typical leading jazz exponents who have reached the top of the tree, but rest assured, it won't be long before they are winning the UK Jazz Awards on their respective instruments.
