Mark Hebron
In the last few months Hebron Hairdressers in Ilminster has been having something of an uplifting experience, literally!
During her term of office as president of the Rotary Club of Ilminster, long standing customer and charity fund raiser, Linda Piggott-Vijeh discovered that the charity 'Against Breast Cancer' collected unwanted bars to support cancer research and at the same time help small businesses in Africa, and asked the salon if they would be willing to be a collection point.
Said Linda, 'Having had breast cancer myself I know that many women find that the bras they once treasured no longer fit after surgery. It seemed sensible for the salon, visited frequently by many local ladies, to provide a focal point in the town for collecting the bras, and I knew that Claire and her team are always willing to join in.'
Claire Hebron added, 'Little did we realise what we had taken on. So many bras were donated that they were taking over the salon. In a short period of time we received almost 300, many of them new and unused. I am thrilled that we were able to help to make a difference.'
Against Breast Cancer uses the bars to help raise vital funds towards dedicated research to improve detection and increase survival after breast cancer diagnosis. The bras also support small businesses in Africa. Recycling through a textile recovery project prevents the bras going into landfill and gives them a new lease of life in developing countries where bras remain too expensive to produce locally. For every tonne of bras collected, Against Breast Cancer receives £700 to fund research. With over 30 million women in the UK you could really help make a difference!
Successful ventures like this keep many families in developing countries out of poverty whilst providing employment for people at home in the UK.

What's on in August 2016
Art
THREE PAINTERS
and a SCULPTOR
Tuesday 30th August to Saturday 10th September
Vanessa Smith
Frances Dale
Marion Sawl
Stephanie Hobhouse
Four artists exhibiting together for the first time. They each have their own interpretation of the way in which they perceive their environment through the mediums of acrylics, oils and ceramics. The artists' love of colour and their sensitive response to their chosen subject-matter combine to make this exhibition a visual delight.

Textile Expressions
Monday 12th Sept to Saturday 1st October
Textile Expressions is a group of textile artists who regularly exhibit together both nationally and internationally. Each artist has evolved their own individual approach and method of working to produce wall hangings and framed or sculptural pieces.
Each piece may combine fabric, thread and stitch with print, paint, mixed media, woven metals, dyes and inks; it may be purely decorative, express feelings, convey a message or pose the question, "What if?"
Inspiration comes from all quarters: the group draws on the past, present or future, on travels and different cultures, or on maps and landscapes to create work that is richly expressive.

"Fun jazz of the highest quality"
This is the best known of the UK's mainstream jazz small groups, and it has won the UK jazz Award in this category an amazing eight times. Most of its members are regular visitors to Ilminster, with the exception of Digby himself and trombonist Chris Gower. They are a fun loving bunch and the music they play clearly reflects their mood. This will be an evening of happy jazz that you would want to dance to if we had the space.

An extremely accomplished, modern/contemporary band with a polished, all round sound, very much in the same vein as some of the popular bands of the 50s and early 60s such as the Miles Davis sextets and the Gerry Mulligan septet/octet. Playing standards and their own compositions, their music is very accessible, with a good swing to it, and will greatly appeal to our modern jazz audience.
