ACADEMIC CONSIDERATION FOR EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES

Are you experiencing an interruption to your studies that is beyond your control? Don’t stress about falling behind in your courses. Academic Consideration is meant to help undergraduate students manage unforeseen, short-term (up to three months) extenuating circumstances.

This could be due to COVID-19 isolation requirements, short-term illnesses, injuries, traumatic events, or other circumstances that impact your academic performance. Students can submit one request per term for three days or less without supporting documentation.

We encourage you to learn more about Academic Consideration and when you might use it. Please visit our Academic Consideration webpage for more information. If you still have questions after reviewing these resources, please contact our team at asc.consideration@queensu.ca.
IMPORTANT NOTE ON EXAMS

If you are taking any courses on campus, you will be writing all final proctored exams, including remote and online course exams, in Kingston. This means you will write proctored exams in only one format: in-person in an exam hall (if you have at least one on-campus course), or online (if you are taking no on-campus courses). Only students doing all courses online (-700 section) or remotely are eligible to write their exams remotely. You should not make any end-of-term travel plans until you have reviewed the exam schedule which is released in mid-October.
DROP DEADLINE AND 6.0 UNIT RULE

The deadline to drop fall term and full-year classes for a full tuition refund has been extended to Friday, September 24 at 11:59 pm. Once the class is dropped in SOLUS, the tuition credit will be automatically applied to your student account. For details visit the Tuition and Fees webpage.

As a reminder, only a maximum of 6.0 units from courses offered by other Faculties and Schools may be counted toward the program and/or Plan Requirements. This includes courses in BMED, COMM, GLPH, LAW, NURS, and courses in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.

If you are a Life Science or Biochemistry student, you are not limited in the number of BMED or GLPH courses you can take, but are otherwise limited to 6.0 units of courses outside FAS.

Run your Academic Requirements Report (ARR) in SOLUS to review what courses you will need to take to complete your degree.

NEW FAS EDII DIRECTOR APPOINTED

The Faculty of Arts and Science is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Elliot Chapple as the new Director, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenization (EDII), effective September 20, 2021.

Dr. Chapple brings with him over 17 years of experience working within academia, community, and government to the Director role. In 2017, after over a decade of working in higher education in the US, Dr. Chapple decided to return home to Canada. Since returning to Canada, Dr. Chapple has served as the Executive Director of Planned Parenthood, Senior Policy Advisor and Research Analyst for the Office of the Status of Women, and he continues to work with community-based research groups on queer and trans health issues. Most recently, he was Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Specialist at the University of Ottawa Department of Medicine.

As the new Director, Dr. Chapple is responsible for taking the lead on proactive EDII initiatives. Supporting the first guiding principle in the Faculty’s Strategic Plan, equity, diversity, and inclusion, including anti-racism, decolonization, and Indigenous resurgence, these strategic initiatives will foster a learning and working environment where all have an opportunity to succeed.

Dr. Chapple will continue work on the FAS EDII needs assessment and develop an associated implementation plan that includes the creation of a mentoring program to retain new Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Colour (BIPOC) faculty members.
