MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Dear colleagues,

As summer is coming to a close and we are looking ahead to the beginning of the school year with both excitement and anticipation, I would like to take a moment to reflect on all of the hard work we have done together over the past year and to thank you personally. I hope you will take a minute to see my shoutout video – I promise it won’t take you much more than a minute and I would like you to hear and see my sincere gratitude. I must also add that I cannot wait to be able to extend my thanks to you in person this fall.
As we prepare for another unique start to the school year, this time on campus but again facing the uncertainty of what the pandemic and public health regulations may bring, it is important that we look after ourselves and each other. Our first priority remains the health and safety of our faculty, staff, and students. As I have mentioned previously, I will always prioritize the wellbeing of the over 1,000 families that comprise our extended Arts and Science community.

In 2021-22, our commitment to supporting you will continue. We will follow up on recommendations made by staff, including the need for strong support for flexible working arrangements, increased professional development opportunities, and clear and regular communication. At the same time, we will continue to develop our supports and resources for faculty members to ensure their success with teaching on campus this fall and to support our research prominence.

This also underscores our continued focus on our common vision and the principles, priorities, and initiatives outlined in our Strategic Plan 2019-2024. In particular, we will continue to support equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigeneity in our Faculty and important strategic initiatives such as the development of our new Minor in Black Studies. We will also take the opportunity to enrich the student experience further by listening to and amplifying their voices, better attending to their lived experiences, and offering new courses and opportunities for experiential learning. Please stay tuned for our forthcoming Annual Review to learn more about our accomplishments over the past year and the strategic initiatives that we will be collaborating on over the course of this year and the years to come.

Once again, thank you for your ongoing hard work and dedication over the past year. I wish you all the best for the rest of the summer and an enjoyable long weekend before classes start on Tuesday, September 7.

Please stay safe and be well.

Sincerely,

Barbara

CURRICULUM SUBMISSION

All Curriculum Submissions for implementation in the 2021-22 Calendar are due to the Curriculum Committee on or before Friday, October 15 and "Early Bird" submissions are welcome.

All submissions must be delivered via the Online Curriculum Tracking System (OCTS) and are processed on a first-come first-serve basis.

CUSTOM-MADE COMPUTER SOFTWARE

Can you think of how some custom-made computer software could make your professional life easier? Are you willing to interact with smart, energetic fourth-year computing students, describe your software needs to them, and serve as a “client” till April next year? If so, then you might just get that software for free.

The final year of our undergraduate program in Software Design in the School of Computing features a full-year six unit software project development course, CISC 498. Students are asked to put what they have learned into practice by designing and implementing a substantial piece of software from scratch. We need ideas for projects that address a real need and in which the software produced is actually going to be used (or at least serves as a prototype).

Visit the CISC 498 website for information. If you have a suitable project, please send a short description by email to Mohammad Zulkernine [email protected].
CONSORTIUM OF UNIVERSITIES FOR GLOBAL HEALTH
