Thus, ends Rendez-vous 2018 ! Farewell St. Catharines, thank you for your warm and friendly hospitality.

Thank you to the attendees, the exhibitors who showed at the trade show, the volunteers, the host facilities, the session presenters and our staff. You all are what makes Rendez-vous a success.

I was very excited to see your input at the caucus sessions, especially the interest in professional development and mentorship. Your input helps us plan the coming conference sessions. Feel free to drop me a note with your ideas. I’d love to hear from you.

Congratulations to this year’s CITT/ICTS Award laureates. There is a special significance to each and every one of our awards. Each year it is a pleasure to recognize the efforts, lives, and dedication of the recipients. Well done all!

Moving forward – your Board of Directors met on Sunday after the conference to continue the business and governance of CITT/ICTS . Along with the changes in the board, new faces, energies and interests, we will move forward with strength, making it easy for us to see future successes. We have an exciting year ahead for CITT/ICTS with another edition of EXPO-SCÈNE set for April 2019 , and many interactions planned with the regional sections.

I hope you are as excited as I am to be in Whitehorse, Yukon next August – the Rendez-vous 2019 destination. Programming and conference plans are in the works for this 29th edition of CITT/ICTS ’s annual conference and trade show.

Before we begin the next chapter, it’s time for a short respite. Enjoy the coming long weekend and the last days of summer.

J’ai été très heureux de voir votre interaction lors des caucus, en particulier votre intérêt pour le développement professionnel et le mentorat. Votre contribution nous aide à planifier les prochaines conférences. N'hésitez pas à me laisser connaître vos idées. J’aimerais bien recevoir de vos nouvelles.

Allons de l’avant – Votre conseil d'administration s'est réuni dimanche après la conférence pour poursuivre les activités et la gouvernance du CITT/ICTS . Parallèlement aux changements au sein du conseil – nouveaux visages, nouvelles énergies et nouveaux intérêts – nous irons de l'avant avec force, ce qui nous permettra de voir les succès futurs . L’année prochaine sera tout aussi passionnante pour le CITT/ICTS avec une autre édition d' EXPO-SCÈNE prévue en avril 2019 et de nombreuses interactions planifiées avec les sections régionales.

J'espère que vous êtes aussi excités que je le suis d’aller à Whitehorse, au Yukon , en août prochain, pour Rendez-vous 2019 . La programmation et l’organisation de la conférence sont en préparation pour cette 29 e édition de la conférence annuelle et du salon professionnel de CITT/ICTS .

Avant d’ouvrir un nouveau chapitre, il est temps de prendre un bref répit. Profitez de la longue fin de semaine et des derniers jours de l'été.

Travels of a Scenic Artist and Scholar at CITT/ICTS Rendez-vous 2018

My colleague Rick Boychuk and I ventured to the Hamilton Scottish Rite on Friday morning August 17. About 45 minutes away from St. Catharines, the Rendez-vous delegates on the bus survived navigating some unexpected obstacles on the way to the theatre. A television series was filming outside of the Scottish Rite, so it caused a bit of a delay at first. The Masonic scenery collection was produced by Volland & Toomey of St. Louis, Missouri, delivered to Canada in 1921. Like many drops, there were charcoal notations that listed the degree, description of the composition and delivery location. The delivery for this scenery did not note St. Catharine, just “Canada!” There were 23 scenes spread out over 84 lines with the drops measuring 24’ high by 37’-6” wide. Although the theater was hot and humid, volunteers jumped at the opportunity to operate the lines. It is always fun to see the delight of my colleagues experiencing Masonic stages for the first time, and yesterday was no exception! As a few of the Foliage: Past and Present Painting Techniques workshop participants were also able to attend, it was especially satisfying to watch them see up close what we had discussed during the workshop. Every collection is unique and has some delightful characteristic. Unfortunately, this particular collection has had extensive repairs completed over the years, not all of which will contribute the overall longevity of the collection.

Wendy Waszut-Barrett  is the president of Historic Stage Services LLC and editor of “The Santa Fe Scottish Rite: Freemasonry, Architecture and Theatre” (Museum of New Mexico Press, 2018). She specializes in the evaluation, restoration and replication of painted scenery. Trained in historical scene painting methodology and the dry pigment painting system, she had restored over five hundred historical backdrops throughout the United States for a variety of venues, including Masonic stages. Mon collègue Rick Boychuk et moi-même sommes arrivés tôt au Hamilton Scottish Rite le vendredi matin 17 août pour organiser une visite des coulisses dans le cadre du Rendez-vous 2018. À environ 45 minutes de St. Catharines, les délégués du Rendez-vous, qui voyageaient par autobus, ont dû naviguer parmi des obstacles inattendus sur le chemin du théâtre parce qu’une série télévisée se tournait à l’extérieur du Scottish Rite.
 
La collection de décors maçonniques a été réalisée par Volland & Toomey, de St. Louis (Missouri), et livrée au Canada en 1921. Comme c’est souvent le cas des toiles peintes, on y retrouvait des annotations au charbon décrivant le degré, la description de l’œuvre et l’adresse de livraison. Fait cocasse, l’adresse indiquée, au lieu de St. Catharines, mentionnait simplement « Canada »! Ce décor comporte 23 scènes peintes réparties sur 84 porteuses, sur des toiles mesurant 24' de haut par 37',6 de large. Malgré la chaleur et l’humidité qui régnaient dans le théâtre, les délégués n’ont pas hésité à manipuler les porteuses.
 
J’ai beaucoup de plaisir à voir mes collègues découvrir les scènes maçonniques pour la première fois et cette visite n’a pas fait exception! Comme quelques participants à l'atelier sur les techniques (passées et présentes) de peinture de feuillages étaient également présents, ce fut particulièrement satisfaisant de les voir admirer de près ce dont nous avions discuté en atelier. Chaque collection est unique et d’une certaine façon charmante. Cette collection particulière a subi d’importantes réparations au fil des ans et, malheureusement, certaines nuiront peut-être à sa longévité.
