Health Professions Week? November 5-11

Health Professions Week (HPW) is a fun, digital event, featuring activities aimed to show students the path to various health professions, wherever they are in their journey. HPW can help show students how to research and match interests to a number of health professions.

There are many events during HPW, so choose what content matters to you. HPW is on-demand, so come back later when you have new questions. HPW will be here to continue to bring you new ideas, new professions, and new paths to a meaningful career.

October is National Physical Therapy Month!

October is American Pharmacists Month!

Your most likely encounter with a pharmacist is at your local pharmacy. Did you know though that pharmacists practice in many different settings?

You can find pharmacists working in hospitals, clinics, drug manufacturers, research facilities and more. Pharmacists are the medication experts in health care. They are relied upon by physicians, nurses, and others to provide guidance on what medications are best for a patient.

Do you have an interest in health care? Consider a career in pharmacy. Pharmacists are one of the most respected professions in the U.S., they have high starting salaries, and there are a multitude of different practice settings and opportunities. A career in pharmacy will give you the satisfaction on knowing that you are impacting patient lives every day.

As a student, start out working in a pharmacy as a pharmacy technician. You can become a pharmacy technician as early as 16. This will provide an opportunity to experience how pharmacies operate and the role that pharmacists play. You may even decide to make a career out of being a technician too. Technicians, especially those who obtain national certification, can perform a variety of job duties. They are a crucial part of the pharmacy in assisting pharmacists.

Next time you visit your local pharmacy, tell them thank you for the care they are providing for you and your community.

East Central Indiana (ECI)

Supporting continuing education efforts for healthcare professionals around the state is part of what we do.  Read about how ECI has partnered with Adams Memorial Hospital, a small, rural critical access hospital in Northeast Indiana, to help provide their staff with the tools to provide the best care to their patients.

"Partnering with AHEC has enhanced the simulation opportunities and resources that we are able to provide our employees. In recent simulations, we have incorporated the use of SuperChloe and Infant Hal. These simulation manikins have a wide range of functionality. We have utilized them with our nurse residents in educating and practicing basic head to toe assessments all the way to code blue and rapid response simulations. These manikins allow us to make real time changes in patient status with a touch of the screen. The manikins’ software provides immediate feedback, such as when performing CPR and ventilations, accelerating the development and improvement of proper skills. In addition, both simulators allow students to be able to practice and develop their clinical skills, from intravenous or intraosseous access and insertions to intubation."

North Central Indiana (NCI)

NCI-AHEC has had a long-standing relationship with Laura Bernfield and Twin Lakes High School. Laura has poured countless hours towards efforts to grow the healthcare workforce in our part of the state. We approached her to create a series of videos that would clearly and concisely instruct students how to perform the required CNA Resident Care Practices, with potential to become a tool to teach these skills consistently statewide.  After a year of planning, the videos were completed and have been released to every CNA instructor in Indiana. Click here or on the photo above to access her videos or to share with anyone who could use this free resource.  NCI-AHEC thanks Laura for her years of partnership and support and wishes her a fruitful retirement.

Northeast Indiana (NEI)

NEI held an orientation with their inaugural Scholars cohort at the headquarters of Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana. They're pleased to have ten students who hail from Goshen College Public Health, Taylor University Public Health, Manchester University Pharmacy, Trine University Physical Therapy, Huntington University Occupational Therapy and Chamberlain University MSN programs.

Northwest Indiana (NWI)

NWI-AHEC is a proud sponsor of New Prairie High School’s HOSA/PLTW efforts to become a Heart Safe School. We are SO PROUD of the New Prairie Girls Soccer team for becoming a Golden Heart Team l!  This means that if someone is to suffer sudden cardiac arrest while at their practice or game, this group has a REHEARSED plan on how to respond to optimize survival. All participants received a CPR keychain mask and a CPR Anytime Kit courtesy of NWI AHEC. Click here or on the image above to watch a drill at their practice.

South Central Indiana (SCI)

There are great things happening in clinical education in South Central Indiana. IU Bloomington nursing students are in clinical training programs in Orange County working to reduce food insecurity, while two family medicine students completed rotations in Corydon and Seymour. Great work!

Southwest Indiana (SWI)

In addition to providing important information for the new AHEC Scholars in Southwest Indiana, the orientation program included a team-building activity on the low ropes course at the University of Southern Indiana. Perfect fall weather combined with an enthusiastic group to foster collaboration and develop new friendships among these future health professionals.
