Statewide Conference a Success!

The 2023 Indiana AHEC Statewide Conference was held on April 14th, and was a great success! It had been 6 years since the last in-person conference, and the day was full of great speakers, networking, and professional development. We were so pleased to have 160+ people in attendance at Ivy Tech's Culinary and Conference Center in Indianapolis.

Thank you to all of our attendees, speakers, and partners who continue to support and believe in the AHEC mission. An extra special thank you to a lovely group of IUPUI American Sign Language seniors for interpreting the entire day for us.

AHEC and HOSA strengthen partnership

AHEC served as the title sponsor at this year's 2023 Indiana HOSA State Leadership Conference. We were well represented there as well, with student participants from all over the state in attendance.

East Indiana (EI) AHEC recently supported the Columbus, Indiana Interprofessional Education Day. Students from five clinical degree programs (IUPUC BSN Nursing, MSN Family Nurse Practitioner, and MA Mental Health Counseling plus Franklin College MS Athletic Training and MS Physician Assistant Studies) participated in a morning of interprofessional icebreakers, discussion prompts, and an unfolding case study that required input from all the professions involved to get to the best possible outcomes for the patient. Nearly 90 students participated in what is at least our seventh installment of this event.

Many of our school sites within the East Central Indiana (ECI) AHEC region have enjoyed one of our more hands-on activities related to exploring the connection between the Heart, Lung, and Trachea. Students participate in a short lesson that tests their knowledge about these organs of the body and then learn about careers that would work directly with them, such as a respiratory therapist. Students then get to explore a set of cow heart, lung, and trachea acquired from our partners at Farmland Locker Inc.

Metropolitan Indianapolis Central Indiana (MICI) AHEC staff hosted a Life and Career Success Conference in UIndy Hall on Wednesday, April 19th. A total of 57 students attended the conference from Kipp Indy High School and the Walker Career Center of Warren Township. There were breakout sessions at the conference on each of these topics: Self-Branding, Time Management, Professionalism, FAFSA and Scholarship, Social Media Etiquette, and Financial Literacy. Chelsea Goodlow was the Keynote Speaker.

In partnership with the University of Southern Indiana’s Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), Southwest Indiana (SWI) AHEC has been providing high school students with information about the progression of dementia and how it impacts quality of life. In addition, both college and high school students have had the opportunity to experience dementia through the simulation activity Dementia Live®. According to AGE-u-cate, this simulation, '‘immerses participants into life with dementia, resulting in a deeper understanding of what it’s like to live with cognitive impairment and sensory change''. Over 200 students have participated in the activities to date.
