Volume 4 | January 2023

The Indiana State Loan Repayment Program (IN-SLRP) is a workforce retention program that provides student loan repayment to health professionals to encourage the full-time delivery of primary care, mental, and dental healthcare services at practices located in federally designated health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) in Indiana. HPSAs are geographic areas, population groups, or healthcare facilities that have been designated by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as having a shortage of health professionals.

In exchange for a two-year service commitment, IN-SLRP recipients can receive up to $20,000 to repay their outstanding student loans. Participants may reapply for the program once; in this case, they could receive up to an additional $20,000 for an additional two-year service commitment, for a total of up to $40,000 for four years of service.

East Central Indiana (ECI)

East Indiana AHEC Scholars volunteered their time to prepare backpacks of personal care items, food, and clothing to share with individuals experiencing homelessness. These backpacks will be given out during the January 2023 Point-In-Time Count, a nationwide effort to make a count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. In Indiana, a wide variety of local community service agencies across the state collaborate to perform the Point-In-Time County and use the data to inform service providers and advocate for funding and housing solutions. EI-AHEC Scholars have participated in and supported the count in Rush, Fayette, and Wayne counties for several years, giving them the opportunity to learn about barriers to healthcare for this vulnerable population and what homelessness looks like in more rural parts of the state.
