Aloha !

Stars, stripes, and… mai tais? If you’re headed to Maui this 4th of July, you’re in for a whirlwind of tropical-style celebrations.

Maui is a fantastic place to celebrate July 4th, with public firework shows over the ocean, firework dinner cruises, and even parades and rodeos.

Make your Maui July 4th the best it can be – here are some of the best things to do on Maui this Independence Day.

Fireworks Shows 🎇

What’s a 4th of July party without fireworks?

Maui residents love their fireworks. And on the 4th of July, fireworks are so plentiful that they’re visible from just about anywhere on the island.

But if you’re looking for a professional, jaw-dropping display – rather than catching glimpses of fireworks launched from the neighborhood behind your condo – Front Street in Lahaina is the place to be.

This annual firework show attracts thousands of spectators. Front Street closes to vehicular traffic at 6:30 pm to accommodate the masses. Then, at 8:00 pm, the dazzling show starts as a blaze of fireworks erupts over the ocean fronting Lahaina.

The festivities also include live music in Campbell Park and a classic car show near the Banyan Tree.

Beach BBQ 🌭

If fireworks aren’t so much your thing – but a 4th of July BBQ certainly is – then pack up for a beach BBQ. South Maui’s beaches are ideal for an Independence Day feast.

Stock up on BBQ essentials at Foodland, then head to one of the Kamaole Beach Parks for the ultimate 4th of July celebration. Kamaole I, II, and III are all equipped with picnic tables and BBQ grills, and the golden sands and warm blue waters serve as the perfect backdrop for your celebration.

You’ll want to get there early to ensure you get a picnic table and BBQ grill. Most holidays on Maui are celebrated at the beach, and things can get pretty crowded pretty quickly.

Dinner Cruises 🛥️

Another popular way to celebrate the 4th of July on Maui is aboard a dinner cruise. Several esteemed local charter companies offer dinner cruises to Lahaina, where you can get unparalleled views of the firework show.

The Pride of Maui offers a firework dinner cruise departing out of Ma’alaea Harbor. This is an excellent option for people staying in South Maui. Instead of driving 40 minutes to Lahaina on the winding Pali, you can hop aboard the Pride of Maui and boat there instead. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy excellent food, drinks, and views along the way.

Makawao Stampede 🏇🏻

If you thought the 4th of July on Maui was limited to fireworks, beach BBQs, and Maui Brewing Company beers, think again.

Maui – Upcountry in particular – is home to a thriving rodeo scene. And Maui’s best rodeo stars convene in Makawao during July 4th weekend.

The Makawao Stampede is one of the most exciting things about 4th of July on Maui. Held at Oskie Rice Arena in Makawao, the rodeo typically kicks off with the adrenaline-pumping bull bash before moving into the rodeo finals.

The rodeo also includes a large parade featuring members of the community and Hawaiian pa‘u horseback riders decked out in flowers and bright colors. In the past, the parade traveled through Makawao town, but since the event has returned post covid, the parade takes place within the arena.

General admission tickets are $25 per day. Purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended, as this popular event usually sells out.
