MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

October 16, 2023

Over the last few weeks, I have heard several reports of COVID sneaking its way back into our world and people falling ill. Yes, I’m as sick and tired of this thing as you. However, at a time when many employers are short employees, it’s very important to keep everyone you have as healthy as possible.

With that in mind, I reached out to ChristianaCare’s Dr. Janice Nevin and Dr. Marci Drees for their informed thoughts. With a small but growing number of hospital admissions for people with COVID, we thought the following video could be helpful to employers as the flu, RSV, and COVID, season comes upon us.

News You Can Use

Economic news this week gets started with remarks by Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker. We were fortunate to have President Harker this past Friday. If you missed that session, here is a recording of his remarks with insights into the regional and state economy. On Tuesday, September retail sales figures are out, as is business inventory data from August. Wednesday brings us the all-important September housing start results, as well as building permits from the same month. We wrap the week up on Thursday with the Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing survey, existing home sales from September, U.S. leading economic indicators for September, and a speech by Fed Chairman Jerome Powell at noon.

After a couple of light weeks for earnings calls, things start to pick up with Charles Schwab headlining today’s calls. Johnson & Johnson, Bank of America, Fulton Financial, Lockheed Martin, and United Airlines are scheduled on Tuesday. Citizens Financial Group, M&T Bank, Netflix, Tesla, Discover Financial Services, State Street, and U.S. Bancorp are among a long list of companies scheduled to host calls on Wednesday. AT&T, Marsh McLennan, Philip Morris International, Truist Financial, American Airlines, American Express, and Comerica are all scheduled at the end of the week.
