I'm a Head Start parent. Can I attend?
Yes! We welcome Head Start parents and caregivers, Head Start staff (teachers, managers, all staff), and anyone who cares about Head Start and wants to tell elected officials why it matters. Please coordinate with your program director as they may already be putting together a team.
Can I bring a group from my program?
If you are a Head Start director or manager, we encourage you to register a group of parents and staff from your program and attend together! We encourage you to schedule legislative visits in groups of 3-6 people. If you would like to bring a large group, there is bus parking available at the capitol (learn more here).
Can I bring parents who speak languages other than English?
Yes! Our staff is working on providing advocacy training in multiple languages, including Spanish. When registering, please select the interpretation option and then choose their preferred language to ensure parents receive interpretation and printed materials in their language.
I have no experience talking to legislators and I don't know what to say. Should I go?
Advocating for Head Start isn't about being an expert in politics, it's about sharing your story. Head Start to the Capitol Advocacy Day is the perfect event for first-time advocates. On March 4, we will be hosting a virtual advocacy training session for all event registrants—and anyone else who would like to attend—to learn to advocate! Then, on the morning of March 18, you will attend a briefing session to review the current political landscape and critical topics in early childhood care and education. Lunch will be provided, followed by a march to the Capitol. In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to meet with your legislators to tell them why Head Start is important to you! We'll provide the training, handouts, and leave-behind fliers. No prior advocacy experience is required!
Can I make a poster or sign?
Yes! Posters are a fun way to express your support for Head Start! We'll be marching together from our training venue to the capitol, and we encourage you to bring a sign (recommended language is forthcoming.)
