Real Art Ways' Virtual Cinema has a variety of interesting films for viewers to enjoy from their own home. Most of these are available at the Virtual Cinema indefinitely, aside from the newest addition, "In Silico," which is available to watch until May 28. "In Silico," made by Noah Hutton, was filmed over ten years as he followed a neuroscientist's quest to simulate the entire human brain via supercomputers. The film is an exploration of modern, cutting-edge science and the extent of human ambition. A recorded discussion of the film with Hutton is also available via YouTube. Also available are the "2021 Oscar Nominated Short Films" compilations, an annual viewing tradition at Real Art Ways, now made virtual. The films are split into three categories — live action, documentary and animation — that can be viewed separately or all together. The featured short films come from all over the world, providing experiences ranging from fun animations that even kids will enjoy to thought-provoking explorations of pressing social issues. "The Weasels' Tale" is another available film, this one an Argentine Spanish-language movie with English subtitles. Directed by prominent Argentine director Juan José Campanella, "The Weasels' Tale" is about a retired actress, her husband, a screenwriter and a director who live together, fighting against two real estate hustlers to preserve the life they've made. Finally, "Saul & Ruby's Holocaust Survivor Band" is an emotional yet powerful documentary about two Holocaust survivors starting a klezmer band, kickstarting a journey of music, memory and joy. All of the featured films in Real Art Ways' Virtual Cinema are hard or impossible to find in American theaters or on streaming services, making them rare opportunities for viewers looking for something entertaining to watch. More information, including instructions for accessing and viewing these films, is available at realartways.org/event/virtual-cinema.

Denise Cormier as Mabel Loomis Todd in A Woman of the World.
|
|
Through May 30, Merrimack Repertory Theatre will have a performance of A Woman of the World available as a video on demand. A Woman of the World is a one-person show written by Rebecca Gilman about Mabel Loomis Todd, a New England native best known for introducing poet Emily Dickinson to America in 1890. The play sees Todd regaling the audience with her own experiences, particularly those from the 13 years she spent with the Dickinson family. Lead actress Denise Cormier's credits include over 20 other New England shows, and she shines as Todd, carrying the show alone through her skills as an actress. Director Courtney Sale describes the play as, "a love letter to New England's outdoors, a celebration of Massachusetts' literary contributions to the world, and a surprisingly emotional exploration of an individual light years ahead of their era." A Woman of the World portrays a free-spirited woman who's far ahead of her time and lives on as an icon of American literature and the New England region. There will also be an interview between Sale and Todd biographer Julie Dobrow on Thursday, May 27 at 7:00 p.m. that can be attended via Zoom. Kosti Ruohomaa’s Beloved Maine at Penobscot Marine Museum
online on May 20

On Thursday, May 20 at 6:00 p.m., Penobscot Marine Museum will be hosting Kosti Ruohomaa’s Beloved Maine on Zoom, in partnership with The University of Maine at Augusta. This lecture and slideshow is led by Deanna Bonner-Ganter and discusses the work of Rockland, Maine photographer Kosti Ruohomaa. Bonner-Ganter is a retired curator who spent over 30 years researching Ruohomaa's life and work, publishing a biography of the photographer — titled Kosti Ruohomaa Photographer Poet — in 2016. Ruohomaa was a prolific and well-known photographer, whose photos were featured in Life Magazine, Look, National Geographic, Ladies Home Journal and Down East, among other publications. But his published work only encompasses 10% of his photographs, the rest of which remained unseen by the general public until Ruohomaa’s agency gifted a large collection of his work to Penobscot Marine Museum in 2018. Ruohomaa's photos capture the spirit of Maine, depicting the state's rugged landscape and hardworking people, finding the poetry in both. Kosti Ruohomaa’s Beloved Maine offers both a look at Ruohomaa's lesser-known work and a glimpse into the culture and beauty of Maine. For more information and to register, visit penobscotmarinemuseum.org/event/kosti-ruohomaa.
