Has your doctor ever said, “You need to lose weight?”


For those of us who are carrying too many pounds, weight loss is a dilemma. It is probably the single biggest frustration that I see patients experiencing in my practice. Patients often realize that they need to slim down, not just to look and feel better, but because the excess weight is causing a cascade of health problems, especially for those who are considered obese. They WANT to slim down. They TRY to slim down, but time and again, they just can't achieve the goal.


I certainly can empathize with these patients, because I have studied the human body's process for building, storing, and burning fat as well as the trouble an imbalance in these processes can cause. There are many systems at play in this fat metabolism equation. As a result, weight loss requires a holistic approach, one that addresses all of the processes in a synergistic way.


For starters, fat itself is not the enemy. It serves a number of purposes in the body. Fat cells insulate the body from extreme temperatures, they store energy, and more. Sometimes, however, a person can take in too many calories, or perhaps not burn enough calories off (exercise), or perhaps their metabolism may be impeded, which causes the body to store more fat. Excessive body fat can also impact inflammation in the body as well as the body's immune function. We saw this fact play out during our stint with COVID-19. Fat cells can also generate the hormone estrogen.


Second, not all methods of weight loss are healthy. Extreme weight loss can even cause the loss of muscle mass.

How many times have you heard from your healthcare provider, “You need to lose weight." He or she may have gone on to say, “You just need to lose weight. Just eat better, you know, watch your calories and exercise.”


That’s it? Eat better and exercise. What does that mean? Am I supposed to eat less? Eat more fruits and less meat? Am I supposed to join the gym? Or should I just walk more?


Well, all of those ideas may be good to some degree, but every person is different, thus the modifications must be tailored to each person’s specific needs. So, let’s explore this further, especially for those who are tipping the scales toward obesity.
