The Food Project

Do you believe that fresh, healthy food should be a right for all people to enjoy? If your answer is yes, check out The Food Project, a local nonprofit organization that envisions a world where youth are active leaders, diverse communities feel connected to the land and each other, and everyone has access to fresh, local, healthy, affordable food.

The Food Project sustainably cultivates 70 acres of farmland across Greater Boston and the North Shore with the help of local teenagers employed in their youth crews. Through hands-on farm work, food justice workshops, and community engagement, young people at The Food Project not only gain critical workplace skills, they drive real and relevant change in their communities. Over 50% of the 200,000 pounds of fresh food they grow is distributed to local families living with food insecurity—by way of food donations, affordable farmers' markets, and partnerships with local businesses. As the Covid-19 crisis continues to widen the already stark disparities in food access, this work is more important than ever.

The Commission aims to recognize and address all forms of discrimination, striving ultimately to make Belmont a safe and welcoming place for all.

Its meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month, now on Zoom, and are open to the public. BHRC's next meeting is on October 1st at 7 pm.
