December 2024

Dear Sherwood,

As the holiday season surrounds us with joy and reflection, I want to express my gratitude to each of you. Your dedication to educating, equipping, and empowering students and adults with autism was fundamental to our success this year.

2024 was a milestone year for Sherwood Autism Center. Together, we:

  • Celebrated our 50th Anniversary on October 19 at the Vox Theatre, where we also unveiled our new brand and website.
  • Expanded our volunteer partnerships for Adult Day Services clients, including Cleaver Family YMCA and Thelma’s Kitchen.
  • Upgraded our Occupational Therapy gym with a new platform, trapeze, and bolster swings - offering even more sensory modulation and balance training for our Special Education students.
  • Announced a new community partnership with Red Apple EdCo to increase engagement and collaboration between Sherwood and our parents, guardians, and families.
  • Unveiled the new theater curtain in our gym with support from our friends at GEHA Health.
  • And so much more!

These are just a few highlights that remind us of the power of collaboration and community. Every achievement was made possible by people—our students, team, clients, families, partners, and the community—united for our mission.

I invite you to make a year-end donation to support Sherwood Autism Center this holiday season. Your gift ensures our legacy continues for Kansas City families 50 more years and beyond.

As we look ahead to 2025, I’m filled with great hope for the future. We have big goals and ambitious plans, and I know we can achieve them together.

From all of us at Sherwood Autism Center, wishing you a holiday season full of joy and peace.

Sincerely,

Kia Walsh

Adult Day Services: Thelma's Kitchen

Our Adult Day Services clients have been volunteering at Thelma's Kitchen, a pay-it-forward cafe where diners choose their own price for lunch. Whether it's cleaning up in kitchen or helping with meal prep, our clients are contributing to affordable, delicious meals that feed our community and neighbors!

Special Education: Working on letter recognition

Students have been hard at work on letter recognition, which lays the foundation for reading and communication skills. Understanding letter recognition connects written words to spoken words — helping all students navigate the world more independently.

Support neurodiversity! We'd love you to join us as a monthly giver! Just $5/month helps Sherwood create unforgettable experiences for our trailblazers. Thank you!

Meet Shannon!

Shannon Torres is the Lead Teacher of the Vocational Classroom at Sherwood. She collaborates with students on a mix of social, vocational and academic skills to prepare them for Vocational Groups and their future. “Here at Sherwood we’re not afraid of change. In fact, we insist on it,” she says. “I wanted to be a part of an organization that puts their clientele first and foremost.”

  • Her Background: Shannon has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with an emphasis in special education and a master’s degree in Autism Spectrum Disorder. After working in charter schools during her career, she was attracted to Sherwood because of the population served and the flexibility to tailor teaching to what students need. “After I attained my degree in ASD, I wanted to be fully immersed in the field … and Sherwood stood out to me.”
  • Day in the Life: You’ll find Shannon focusing on her students and what they need to be successful. She emphasizes trust first. “Above all, my relationships with students and families are the most important,” she says. Her days are full of social groups, academic learning, and introduction to vocational skills. She enjoys connecting with her students on the things they are interested in.
  • Joy Outside of Work: Shannon is mom to two boys (17 and 15) and a little girl (9). She’s passionate about outdoor adventures and finding new places to explore with her children and boyfriend. She loves her tribe, and if she does get some time to herself, you’ll find her reading or cross-stitching.

Thank you, Shannon, for bringing your passion and expertise to Sherwood students. We’re so grateful for you!
