WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH $641 MILLION DOLLARS?

Baltimore City was awarded $641 million dollars through the American Rescue Plan in 2021. That money was on top of other money awarded for covid relief purposes, and can be spent on a wide variety of things. So how is the city spending the money?


The Baltimore Banner reported this week that about “38% of the city’s assessed grant recipients are listed as ‘Medium Risk/High Risk.” This includes the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, which includes Safe Streets, and is receiving almost $50 million dollars. We are also attending community events to keep you posted on the City’s plans. Last week I attended a public meeting hosted by the Department of Public Works (DPW) at Arlington Elementary School for the City’s 10-year solid waste management plan. There was a lot of information about composting and recycling, but a lot of people seemed interested in basic trash collection and preventing illegal dumping.

According to the City Code, DPW is REQUIRED to collect trash and recycling once a week. City Code, art. 23 § 1-4. Baltimore City residents deserve clean streets and reliable trash and recycling pickup. Let’s make sure that happens!
