WA STATE LONG TERM CARE TAX
What you need to know about the Washington State
Long Term Care Program
Did you know a new payroll tax associated with Long Term Care will go into effect on January 1st, 2022? We reached out to a local insurance broker, Pilkey Hopping & Ekberg to find out exactly what you need to know.
- The payroll tax is 0.58% and has no cap on the amount of earnings
- You can opt-out of the tax ONLY if you have a qualified long term care insurance policy in place by Nov 1, 2021, or EARLIER
- If you have a policy, you can apply for exemption from October 1, 2021, to December 31, 2022
- You will be required to submit the exemption letter to your employer to avoid the tax
So, should you consider paying the tax or investing in a Long Term Care plan?
Consider how much tax you will pay and how many years before you retire.
If the tax is more than purchasing a policy or you are closing in on retirement (no more tax), then you may choose to pay the tax.
Do you expect income to go up in the future?
The higher your income, the more tax you pay, but your benefit doesn’t go up. There is a certain point where purchasing a personal LTC policy will provide you with more benefits than paying the tax.
Does your health allow you to get a private long-term-care policy?
Check and see! They are getting harder to get because chronic illnesses are an indicator of needing care in later years.
Is having funds to cover care beyond $36,500 important to you?
If the tax is cheaper, having better benefits may still be worth the extra dollars you will pay. Nursing homes in WA State are averaging $8000 per month. The average stay in a nursing home is hovering around 3 years.
Is having a policy to take with you wherever you go important?
If you leave the state, you lose the benefits. Paying a little more if you plan to move may be worth it.

America's workers are exhausted and burned out...
Employers across the country, from Fortune 500 companies like PepsiCo and Verizon to boutique advertising firms and nonprofit organizations, are continuing pandemic benefits such as increased paid time off and child- or elder-care benefits as well as embracing flexible work schedules and remote work in recognition that a returning workforce is at high risk of burnout.
