After a super busy first couple of months of 2013 we are looking forward to another busy spring season!
On a sadder note the Porsche world mourns the passing of Bruce Anderson who passed away this past weekend after an extended illness. Bruce was a friend and mentor to many of us in the Porsche industry. It was Bruce who first told Charles Navarro of LN Engineering that he and I should begin developing the M96 engine platform. Without some prodding and pressure from Bruce, we'd still be only building aircooled Porsche engines and I'd not be writing this newsletter content right now. We miss you Bruce.
The IMS Solution which is the first and only design change for the IMS Bearing has been a HUGE hit already. This development immediately gained respect from the industry and we have been receiving compliments on the simplicity of the design from all across the automotive world, to include outsiders that work on other vehicles. We currently have vehicles from all over the USA scheduled for IMS Solution installations and its not too late to schedule one of our specialized procedures.
I have made more progress on the M96 Engine Bible and have also made progress with the development of our new piston installation tool.
With the IMS Solution now on the market I plan on sending these newsletters more frequently and not packing them with quite so much info per issue. Thanks for believing in us :-)

Freshly Rebuilt 3.4 996 Engine
Based off a factory remanufactured 3.4 996 engine originally built in 2010 with less than 5,000 miles, we built a track ready 3.4 with ARP rod bolts and carrier bolts, coated bearings, billet tensioner paddle and oil pump drive, upgraded lifters, rebuilt heads with performance valve springs, backdated IMS (IMS Solution ready - currently fitted with single-row IMS Retrofit), among other upgrades. IMS Bearing Failure Caught On Video! With Audio!
To anyone who believes that IMS Bearing failure isn't real, or is overly exaggerated in severity, this video will speak volumes. A peaceful, spirited drive across the european countryside quickly cost the owner of this Porsche a new engine. Note the
spontaneity of the failure and how it occurred with zero warning. The car had full power right up till the point where the bearing featured stage 4 catastrophic failure.
Peter's Disaster
Peter's Boxster was a rolling disaster when it arrived here at Flat 6 Innovations after being manipulated by another shop who disassembled the engine and quickly found that they were in over their heads.  Knowing the single row bearing is undersized for this application, LN Engineering and Flat 6 Innovations have secretly been working on a solution (pre-dating the introduction of the single row bearing IMS Retrofit kit) to the bearing failures experienced in model year 2000 through 2005 intermediate shafts using the single row ball-bearing, dubbed the IMS Solution. The Heart Of The Problem
Over time we've seen some "fixes" for various ailments related to the M96/ M97 engine that we refer to as "band-aids". You know, the kind of things that are done when the developer, or the buyer really doesn't understand the failure or what causes it.
There are times when these "fixes" create more harm than good and we are reminded of these things over and over again when we receive calls from those who have applied them and have more issues than the original ailment creates.
Remember: The only way around the problem is straight through the middle of it; so don't apply a "band aid", just bite the bullet and address the root of the problem. |
