When Bad Things Happen...

A couple of weeks ago, I walked outside to my assigned parking space

to see my car sitting on a brick, and the front wheel missing. Ugh!

As a student at the University of Santa Monica, a question we were often asked to reflect on was 'What might your Soul be attempting to learn or heal through this situation or experience?' Fortunately, this is now a natural part of my pondering around many situations, especially hard ones. So later that day, I asked myself this question, and the blessings came pouring through.

When I first saw situation, I freaked out and tears came. There is such healing in letting raw emotions flow. Then, I went quickly into practical mode... calling AAA for a tow, then my insurance to see if it was covered, then the police, then the dealer to secure an appointment - it was all in the span of about 18 minutes from freak out to last call. In each call I was met with compassion

and assurance from everyone I spoke with.

I am so Blessed!

While I was on hold for a minute during those calls, I sent a group text to my two brothers, dad and stepmom, mom and stepdad, sending them a picture and a sentence about it. Immediately 13 texts were fired back, and two phone calls came through. My dad lives 14 minutes away. He arrived 15 minutes after I sent that text. My older brother showed up a few minutes after that. Everyone in the family text helped me in various ways through this process. I am very lucky to have such an amazing family. We've had our differences over the years, but in times of need, we really show up for each other!

I am so Blessed!

Seeing the brick under my car and the missing wheel broke open some part of me. It was a young part, maybe 4 or 5 years old... who felt like she was such a good girl, and she didn't understand why someone would do something 'mean' like this, stealing from her... especially when we work so hard.

That said, I was never once mad at the person who did this. This is huge progress for me! I was hurt, but I dropped into this hurt and was able to be with the little one inside who felt violated, to love and comfort her. This is always the way through upset in my experience - tending to the parts that are upset with compassionate care and tender loving. When we do this over time, this tending to our hurts as they surface, eventually a higher perspective opens up to actually include the person who caused the harm... seeing that on some level, they didn't feel they had something they needed so they felt the need to take it. This hurts my heart... because it's not just one person who did this 'bad' thing. It's a collective part of humanity crying out, with unmet needs... and for some, the only way they know how to get something is to take it. I wonder if this person has the amount of loving support that I do?

My guess is they don't. I'm sending Light to them as I write this,

Remembering, I am so Blessed!

I had my car towed to the Toyota Dealer to check everything.

It turns out that only my front wheel was missing, whew! The dealer wanted $1550 to fix it, so I took it to Big O Tires and had it fixed for $540.

I am so Blessed!

While we can't always choose the experiences we go through,

we can choose our attitude and altitude. We can choose our response. We can choose how we relate to ourselves and the situation.

If you are going through something challenging, consider the question:

What is my Soul attempting to assist me in learning through this?

See what comes forward?

I would love to hear what you discover.

In loving,

In the final analysis, the question of why bad things happen to good people translates itself into some very different questions, no longer asking why something happened, but asking how we will respond,

what we intend to do now that it has happened.

Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and, above all, confidence in ourselves. We must believe we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.

Inspirational SOUL of the Month

The Freedom To Choose Project

I just returned from another powerful weekend at Valley State Prison for Men with Freedom to Choose (FTC). There were about 80 of us volunteers, and 130 brothers in blue. Each time I go, I am blown away by the depth, loving, healing and transformation that occurs for us all.

FTC's Vision: The Freedom to Choose Project transforms the lives of individuals impacted by incarceration through compassionate experiential education that has been proven to reduce prison violence and recidivism.

We are deeply committed to our vision that every person who wants to

learn to become a responsible, productive member of society has the opportunity and support to do so.

It is our experience that people can change, even after spending years in prison or years in addiction. The capacity for the redemption of the human spirit is extraordinary and we have witnessed seeming miracles as people become peaceful, productive and responsible members of our society.

FTC is celebrating their 20 year anniversary this month, and they are just getting started! Donate, Volunteer, Spread the word! Freedom to Choose

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
