When Mentorship Sparks Change: Iban's Story

Iban graduated high school in 2021 after a year shaped by online classes, isolation, and rising anxiety about the daunting choices ahead. As a first-generation-to-college student, he realized how little he knew about potential career paths. Iban had taken coding courses and loved working with technology, yet the computer science field seemed intimidating.

When Iban joined Future Link in 2023, he was surprised by the close-knit community. Surrounded by peers, he learned time management, self-advocacy, and how to recognize his own strengths. Being elected Student Speaker gave him a powerful boost of confidence, but that quickly faded as classes, work, family responsibilities, and financial pressures mounted. He sensed a Mentor could help, but adding another commitment felt overwhelming.

Catherine, a longtime Future Link volunteer, began working with Iban on small tasks like completing scholarship applications. Nearly two years later, their relationship has thrived. “At first, I thought I could do things myself, but the reality was that I was struggling,” Iban reflects. “Once Catherine became my Mentor, my grades went up, my mental health improved, and now I advise others to find a Mentor in their lives.” With Catherine’s guidance and Iban’s effort, he secured enough scholarship funding to fully cover his transfer to the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park. Together, they recently celebrated Iban’s acceptance into UMD’s Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students (ACES) program. His interest in cybersecurity peaked after interning with SecureTech360, a Future Link employer partner, where he earned specialized certifications.

Drawing on her background as an attorney, Catherine emphasizes advocacy and storytelling in their meetings. “When we write cover letters or scholarship essays, we think about the audience, what they need, and what you can offer.” This approach has strengthened their trusted bond. “We’re on the same team,” Iban says. “A win for me is a win for Catherine, and that feels right.”

When asked why she volunteers, Catherine shares, “When you help a student, you help their family and the broader community. That’s deeply meaningful and rewarding.” Future Link invites you to volunteer with this supportive community and help the next generation of talent flourish.
