Special Post-Election Topic

When is it okay to cancel, disown, or not talk to people who voted differently than you?

When is it okay to sever a relationship or shut somebody down or write somebody off because of their political views? When is collaboration unacceptable?

Wednesday Nov 20 1pm ET

We’re going to explore when to give up trying to be friends and when to take up a not-on-speaking-terms policy. We’re going to explore our own ethical obligations in the face of wildly different political views.

I will be joined in this conversation by Consultant and UMaine Instructor of Communication Kendra Rand who has done a lot of research on emotional discomfort, canceling, and hard line social media.

We want YOU to join the conversation. What do YOU think about these questions. It’s a TALK Show; we’re gonna talk about this. We’re going to learn from each other. And support each other. (And if you don't want to speak up, that's fine.)

My Training Talk Shows are always free. Always interactive. Just 50 minutes online.

Maine Downtowns are SO Precious

This week I attended the 25th Anniversary Conference of the Maine Downtown Center. I helped start the program 25 years ago and they invited me to say a few words about the history. Executive Director Anne Ball and I traded some "then" and "now" stories. It was really great to be in the presence of so many community-minded people. For the anniversary they made this fun tribute video.

For 25 years the Maine Downtown Center (affiliated with Main Street America) has helped dozens of Maine downtowns come back to life and serve as our community centers.

When is it okay to judge against a whole category of people?

We sometimes make categorical judgments about groups of people. “Trumpsters are like this. Democrats are like that.” We usually make such judgments for convenience and sometimes to intentionally demonize a group of people.

In this video I explain three cautions about making categorical judgments. Click here for Transcript & Comments.
