Dear Friend,
For many children, summer means fun and freedom. For the children we serve, it can mean increased food insecurity as school meals and other support systems disappear.
A teacher at one of our partner schools recently shared a story that captures this reality.
During recess, she was told a third-grade student was selling items on the playground. When she spoke with the child, the student proudly explained that she was trying to help her mom pay the bills. The teacher gently explained that students couldn't sell items at school, and the girl immediately packed everything away.
Then she smiled and said, "Well, that's good because now I can eat them when I get home."
That simple statement speaks volumes.
Too many children understand financial hardship far earlier than they should. They know when food is scarce. They know when their families are struggling.
As we continue serving children through summer programs and prepare for the coming school year, we are reminded that food security is about more than meals. It is about giving children the chance to focus on being kids.
