Dear Parents,

As part of our COVID-19 reopening plan, St. Brigid is serving in-person and registered online students concurrently through Digital Academy, Google Meet, and Google Classroom (Grades K-8). The beauty of this approach is that students who are sick or quarantined for an extended period of time can transition to online learning and receive instruction in a way that was not possible prior to the 2020-2021 school year. That being said, there are also important practical and logistical considerations in students being able to successfully engage in virtual instruction. It is not as simple as alternating back and forth between virtual and in-person; rather, we must follow a process of orienting students so that they understand and can access the right technology, follow an accurate schedule, and take the proper assessments.

Students Absent for 1-4 Days (Duration Not Known to Start):
  • Example: A student has a non-COVID related illness, sees a physician, and starts antibiotics. On the 3rd day, the child has been 24 hours fever and symptom free, and he or she returns to school to make-up missed work. During this time, the child may or may not be participating in work at home.

  • For short-term absences and sicknesses, in-person students should expect to rest, recuperate, and make up work after they return. We do not expect absent students, especially students who are sick, to be doing anything other than resting and focusing on returning to 100% health. When students return, the teachers will work with students to determine what work needs to be completed. For more information, please see page 17 of our Parent/Student Handbook. Students have as many days to catch up on missed work as the number of days absent.

  • K-2 Students:
  • If students are feeling able to participate in learning, teachers will email you if there are specific assignments that may be completed at home. Due to the short duration of the absence, the Home Learning Coordinator will not be involved in the independent learning, and teachers may not be able to support with immediate needs during the day. Referring to any teacher emails, students are simply encouraged to participate and complete what they are able to, knowing that they will have time to get caught up upon return.
  • 1st and 2nd grade students could always practice reading and math via Raz Kids and i-Ready. Once Kindergarteners get devices, they will be able to get into these programs, and then they will be available at home.

  • 3rd-8th Students:
  • If students are feeling able to participate in learning and have a school issued device, they will have real-time access to pacing guides, class work, and virtual classes through Digital Academy, Google Classroom, and Google Meet. The teachers showed students how to navigate Digital Academy, Google Classroom, and Google Meet, and students should be able to do so independently or with minimal support. Due to the short duration of the absence, the Home Learning Coordinator will not be involved in the independent learning, and teachers may not be able to support with immediate needs during the day (examples-finding Google Meet codes, assignments, etc). Following the pacing guide, students are simply encouraged to participate and complete what they are able to, knowing that they will have time to get caught up upon return.

Students Absent for 5 or More Days (Duration Not Known to Start):
  • Example: A student has a non-COVID related illness and starts to feel better around the 4th or 5th day; however, he or she is still symptomatic and is expected to be out an additional week, and, therefore, starting home learning with the support of a Home Learning Coordinator.

  • On the 5th day of absence, the pod teacher will notify our Home Learning Coordinator. The coordinator will contact parents and discuss the expected duration of absence. The group will come to a decision about whether or not it will benefit the student to transition to online learning. If it is decided that the student is able to join the home learners, the Home Learning Coordinator will onboard the student and his/her parents as soon as possible.

Students Absent for 5 or More Days (Duration Known to Start):
  • Example #1: A student’s immediate family member tests positive for COVID-19, the family notifies the school, and the student must quarantine for an extended period of time. In this case, we will quickly start the online learning onboarding process.

  • Example #2: In the event of a family emergency, the student must travel to a “hot-spot” in the United States and must quarantine for 14 days upon his or her return. In this case, the student’s family should contact the school, and we will quickly start the online learning onboarding process. Please Note: Families should only exercise this option in times of true necessity, not for discretionary travel or vacations.

  • For situations when a student must quarantine or knows the duration of his/her absence (>5 days), our Home Learning Coordinator will collaborate with teachers to onboard the student. The goal of this process is to get the student ready to learn virtually as soon as possible so instruction can continue concurrently with other in-person and home learner students.

Other Notes:
  • All students are always encouraged to join morning prayer via Google Meet (code: prayer).
  • If a student is going to be out for 5 days or more days and doesn’t have a school issued device, the Home Learning Coordinators will work with Mrs. Westendorf to obtain one. A pick up can be arranged. Other needed items would be available for pick up as well.
  • K-1 devices are still backordered.
  • If you have questions concerning health, please contact Peggy Iannarino. If you have questions regarding the learning, please contact Jill Carfagna.

ABSENCE POLICY
  • At St. Brigid, we do not focus on “perfect” attendance but rather attendance for the purpose of participating in school work. Attendance must be balanced with our priority to keep students healthy. We are asking families to be preventative when symptoms or illnesses occur. When students are absent, they are considered to not be physically in the building. We use this attendance to know, at any time, who is and who is not in the building, especially during emergency situations. Therefore, if students are not in the building, they will be marked absent. On our permanent attendance records in the cumulative files, teachers will provide a specific reason for the absence (ex. Due to COVID).

  • Our consistent remote learners, those that have elected to be at home for a specific period of time, will be marked absent or present remote, depending on attendance each day.
