"When Substance Abuse is Not Just Using:
A Discussion on Dual-Diagnosis"View as Webpage
Open to all Flight Attendants, Flight Attendant Leadership and Airline Management
Substance abuse is an outward sign that someone has a problem (or problems). Whether caught by friends, family, a legal issue, or drug testing, it may seem that this is the “problem” and by fixing this people will be better. More often, a mental health issue such as trauma, depression, loneliness, financial anxiety, unresolved grief, or simply boredom may be the precipitating issue and the substance use follows the mental health issue.
Effective intervention needs to understand and treat both.
Dr. Beau Nelson, Chief Clinical Officer for FHE Health, will explain dual diagnosis, the intersection of mental health issues and substance use (as well as other addictive behaviors), how it is treated, and how to understand the interplay of mental health issues in the process of recovery for a substance use disorder and how that looks in the real world.
