Digging Out from Under: The Crew that's
Working Hard to Catch Up
The phones at Syracuse Model Neighborhood Corp. (SMNC), one of the city's largest non-profit, affordable rental housing providers, started ringing at a fever pitch a couple months ago. SMNC Site Director Kevin Schoon thinks the phones and emails really picked up once word got out that Home HeadQuarters was lending a hand to get the Southside rental housing organization

back on track. "Well, that and the Crew started getting out into the neighborhood; people began putting names to faces and learning that we can be counted on."

All the guys agree on one thing: getting SMNC back to being a place where people want to live is the main goal. "I know we can turn this place around," says David Rodriguez, who came to Syracuse from Brooklyn seven years ago. Also, originally from the Syracuse area, Brian Printup and Corey Dillon both joined HHQ as part of Opportunity Headquarters' construction crew. Both guys find working on SMNC properties a daily challenge, but also an opportunity to meet many different people, learn new things and solve big problems. As Brian says, "this is definitely not a job you would call monotonous."

"An Early Move with Plenty of Space"
Raymond Resto (pictured left) didn't come to Home HeadQuarters in the usual manner as most customer who work on their long-term dream of homeownership.

Mr. Resto came to HHQ because he had spent the year just trying to keep things together. Recently widowed, the father of three girls had moved in with family into a one-bedroom apartment to help stabilize the family.

Today, he found himself in our office, along with his brother, to sign the paperwork on a HHQ fully-rehabbed, 3-bedroom home in Syracuse's Strathmore neighborhood. He can move in early with his kids and when the purchase is final, he will have taken advantage of Down Payment and Closing Cost Assistance through the CDFI's Capital Magnet Fund and New York State HOME Funds. We wish Mr. Resto and his family all the best (and all the space) in their new home.

If you'd like to get started on your homeownership journey, sign up for a free HomeOwnership Orientation to see if you're ready for some additional space.
Short Stuff
There is still funding available to landlords in Solvay and the Town of Geddes for property improvements. You can find that program, and other financing options for landlords on our webpage at https://www.homehq.org/rental.

We know funding to help homeowners at risk of foreclosure is coming; we just don’t know when! The State is still waiting to launch the program following Federal approval. In the meantime, if you are a homeowner who is falling behind in your mortgage or fear you will miss payments, sign up for Home HeadQuarters Foreclosure Prevention Workshop on our website at https://www.homehq.org/foreclosure-prevention.

Grants of up to $6,000 with loans of $20,000 are now available as part of the Onondaga County 1% Home Improvement Loan & Grant Program. Do you live in Nedrow? How about Elbridge? There's all kinds of places eligible to participate in this easy home improvement program. Homeowners will need to demonstrate they have had a COVID impact and meet household income eligibility requirements, but let our lending staff help you with all of those requirements!
