Greetings

This week we're presenting Umbrella Arts Center, Williams College Museum of Art, and Gallery 360.

For many artists, it's about the journey, not the destination. This week's exhibitions highlight artists who incorporate process into their work. From paintings that are reworked for decades to installations designed with performance spaces in mind, these works are given depth and nuance through their processes.

The deadline to advertise in the January / February edition of Artscope Magazine is Sunday, December 15.

The Alchemy of a Life: Selected Works by Thorpe Feidt at The Umbrella Arts Center

in Concord, Massachusetts, through December 16

The Umbrella Arts Center presents The Alchemy of a Life: Selected Works by Thorpe Feidt, a show that looks back on the life and work of Ipswich-based artist and Montserrat College of Art professor Thorpe Feidt. Inspired by the sounds of jazz and Herman Melville's book "The Ambiguities," Feidt's aptly-named series "The Ambiguities" consists of over 450 paintings and over 1,000 line drawings. Working abstractly, Feidt's process sometimes took decades, returning to his pieces after they had been "completed." According to Feidt himself, paintings, his included, are a language that everyone can understand. The gallery is open every day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Umbrella Arts Center is located at 40 Stowe Street, Concord MA. For more information, please visit here.

Pallavi Sen: Colour Theory at Williams College Museum of Art

in Williamstown, Massachusetts, through December 22

Williams College Museum of Art presents Pallavi Sen: Colour Theory, an exhibition that invites viewers "into an imagined domestic interior," according to a curatorial statement. Pallavi Sen, Assistant Professor of Multiples + Distributed Art at Williams College and Dean at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, creates these imagined spaces with the collaboration of students, fellow artists and writers. With portions of the gallery set up as a stage to be used by performers and the artist, "the project reflects the key tenets of Sen’s practice, namely teaching, collaborative making, and the nurturing of life." The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Williams College Museum of Art is located at 15 Lawrence Hall Drive, Williamstown, MA. For more information, please visit here.

Cat Mazza: Network at Gallery 360

in Boston, Massachusetts, through April 12, 2025

Gallery 360 presents Cat Mazza: Network, a show featuring the work of New England-based artist Cat Mazza, who "works at the intersection of textiles, technology, and 'tactical media,'" according to a curatorial statement. Mazza's artwork tackles the "two entangled threads" of labor and social change, and networks and communities. Mazza works in both analog and "digital" knitting, using a software called knitPro that was developed along with programmer Eric St Onge in 2004. This combination of digital and analog mediums along with the subject matter on display "prompts viewers to consider their own textile and tactile entanglements in turn." The gallery is open Monday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gallery 360 is located at Northeastern College, 360 Huntington Ave, Boston MA. For more information, please visit here.
