With our new machines we can press out five complete WAPIs
at one time, thanks to
Chris Galligan and Otto Bombach.
Greetings!

The world as we know it seems to have come to a halt.

All nations around the world have been affected to one degree or another with this COVID19 virus and the WAPI project is no exception. Missionaries and humanitarian volunteers have come home for the duration, which means that our outreach to share clean water has slowed to a trickle. We were able, however, in January to get 1200 units to different areas in Africa. Thanks to John Stafford, who works with Seventh Day Adventist teaching the bible, we sent 1000 units to Gabon, Africa, which by the way, is our largest shipment to any organization. We also sent 100 units to Kenneth Williams in Botswana, Africa, and to Ezekiel Nyakwara in Kenya. All of the above countries have been in lock-down, so results of passing out WAPIs and receiving photos back will be forthcoming when conditions allow.

WAPI production is still moving forward with improvements to our production capabilities. Chris Galligan and Otto Bombach is putting the finishing touches on our new, pneumatic multiple WAPI making press. When completed, we will be able to press out 5 complete WAPIs at one time. Also, we are improving our current presses as well. I believe that we produce the finest WAPIs in the world. If you haven’t seen our new look, please purchase one.
Help your family be prepared.
We have been working with Don Kremer of the Peninsula Rotary Club in California. They sell WAPI making kits and distribute them to different organizations throughout the U.S. We have included an article from a youth group from Coronado, California who decided to make WAPIs for Mexico. I hope that you enjoy their efforts. Consider getting involved! We have many outreaches like Coronado Rotary Club and are thankful for all of them.

We never know when a disaster may occur and water availability could be one of those that we do not expect at any time. Consider purchasing a WAPI or two and help your family be prepared.

May Gods richest blessings be with you all,
Bob

Save Lives with WAPIs

The water is clear ahead for many, thanks to the Coronado High School Interact Club (sponsored by the Rotary Club) and their generous volunteer efforts on Saturday. From 8 in the morning until noon students bustled in the Multi-purpose Room at the high school creating water purifiers for those in need in developing countries. How does one do this, you say? Well, Andrew Pettit, the senior behind the entire event, tells all. First, though, what is a WAPI?
Students making WAPIs.
Water Pasteurization Indicator
WAPI is a simple thermometer that indicates when the water has reached pasteurization temperature 149°F/65°C making it safe to drink. The WAPI is a small handheld device that you place contaminated water in a pot then place overheat when the water reaches 149°F heat it will kill all harmful pathogens (disease-causing) and is now free from disease. Inside the WAPI is a small piece of specialized wax that when heated to desired temperature floats to the bottom of the device showing when the water is heated enough to take off the heat source. The device can be made in five simple steps: placing the wax inside a tube, fastening a washer to weight the WAPI upright, heating and clamping
both ends, threading fishing wire through
the ends so it can hang on the pot, and then
bagging the WAPIs. The sixth step is shipping them; and in the case of Saturday’s event, 400 were created and shipped to Mexico.

WAPI’s waiting to be bagged
Why is this lifesaving device being assembled by Coronado High School students? Pettit explains that the Rotarians have been partnered with the WAPIs for the World ministry for years, and since Interact Club and Rotary has always been able to produce mass amounts, the company sends supply parts for annual WAPI building days.

Leaving the impact of giving every student the opportunity to help out the community (because it is open to everyone) and it is a great way to start helping the world! It also counted as a Saturday school, so it is a win, win! For not only the students but the places where the WAPIs are going. Want to get involved? Although this WAPI-making event has passed, there are similar events happening at UCSD with their Rotarian Club members. Pettit explains that future Interact projects are on the horizon with ideas such as feeding the homeless, beach cleanups, and helping an orphanage in Tijuana.
Pasteurization Occurs at 149°F-65°C Water Boils at 212°F-100°C

When is the water pasteurized?
The WAPI is placed inside a pot of water with a specialized wax at the top of the tube. A washer keeps the WAPI on the bottom of the container. When the wax melts and falls to the bottom of the WAPI, it shows that the water has risen to a Pasteurized Temperature.
Thanks to the students and volunteers who helped on Saturday, there will be access to clean drinking water for many more people than before. Pettit states his thanks by saying, “I would like to thank everyone that came out and helped make these WAPIs! It was a HUGE success and I cannot wait to do it again!” He would also like to thank you, as a community member, for making this place a safe environment for students who want to help others.

Are you inspired to join and help our community and other parts of the world, but you are not in high school? That’s not a problem, as the Rotary Club accepts members at any age who are willing to help serve the community; just get in contact with them at coronadorotary.org
