When purchasing transformers, switchboards/gears, and DC combiners, what should you be looking for?

Customers should evaluate electrical fit, verified safety, reliability, delivery certainty, and lifetime cost. Unicorn Solar works with our customers to detail out all the requirements. A competitive price only helps if the equipment works with the system, passes inspection, and can be maintained.

Assuming U.S. commercial, industrial, or renewable-energy projects, here’s a practical purchasing checklist. Exact requirements depend on voltage, application, utility, and local code.

Transformers

Unicorn Solar compares transformer losses over the expected service life, rather than relying only on the quoted efficiency percentage. Loading affects the specific transformer.

Switchboards and switchgear

For U.S. low-voltage equipment, UL 891 switchboards and UL 1558 switchgear are distinct categories with differences in construction and short-time withstand capability. Buyers should verify the actual assembly standard rather than rely on the word “switchgear” in a quotation. Medium-voltage equipment requires a different standards review.

DC Combiners

First establish whether the combiner serves solar PV or battery storage; the protection requirements and fault characteristics differ.

Look for documented certification of the complete assembly, where required—not merely certified components inside it. UL identifies UL 1741 among the standards it uses for PV combiner evaluation; the applicable certification depends on the product and application. DC disconnects must also carry suitable DC ratings.

For every purchase, require these before placing the order:

  • A written compliance and exceptions list: Every requirement matched to the offered equipment, with deviations clearly identified.
  • Approval drawings: Dimensions, weight, cable entries, terminals, electrical diagrams, and foundation or mounting requirements.
  • A defined testing package: Routine factory tests, any required witnessed acceptance tests, and commissioning responsibilities.
  • A credible delivery schedule: State whether lead time begins at order placement, drawing approval, or another milestone.
  • Complete commercial terms: Freight, unloading, installation, startup, spares, warranty start date, field labor coverage, and exclusions.
  • Evidence of service capability: Comparable installations, local support, response commitments, and parts availability.

The most useful buyer question Unicorn Solar can get from its customers is: “Show us the documentation proving this exact configuration meets our project requirements, and identify everything excluded from your price.”
