When the Wind Blows ...

Our "Ask the Expert" question this month is about using the Wind Tables in the TRI Concrete & Clay Roof Tile Installation Guide. TRI President & Technical Director Rick Olson walks you through the steps to determine fastening requirements and options using the TRI Concrete & Clay Roof Tile Installation Guide. 


Staying with the "wind" theme, June is the beginning of Hurricane season so it makes sense that the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association (FRSA) would choose to hold their annual convention this  month. FRSA's convention and conference is one of the largest in the country. They have fantastic training, great networking time with roofing industry professionals and a massive exhibition floor.

The convention begins on Thursday, June 16, 2016 with sporting events (golf tournament, fishing tournament and a clay shoot tournament), and the Tile Roofing Institute Certification class. 

Earn CE Credits with TRI at the FRSA Convention - June 16, 2016

If you are a Florida contractor/roofer/consultant and want to get a jumpstart earning your required CEC's, the Tile Roofing Institute (TRI) is offering a 6-hour course based on the FRSA-TRI Fifth Edition Revised Florida High Wind Tile Installation Manual. The class is taught by tile manufacturer technical representatives and will take you through a variety of underlayment and fastening options for various locations and wind uplift conditions. If you were certified or re-certified in 2014 when the 5th Edition manual was initially released you can attend the first 2 hours of this class and take the 15 question renewal test at the morning break. You will earn 2 CE Credits for the 2 hour review of the 5th Edition Manual, and your TRI Certification will be extended another 2 years.
The renewal fee is $99.00. Register on-line.

Free Kick-off Welcome Reception - June 16th

Thursday evening (June 16) officially kicks-off the FRSA Convention with a Welcome Reception at the Hyatt Regency Resort. This FREE event is open to all and features delicious food stations, an open bar, and entertainment. If you sign up for the TRI High Wind Class you will be 6 CE's ahead of your competitors on opening night! Hope to see you there.

"Ask the Expert" - How to Use the High Wind Tables
The high wind tables in the TRI Concrete & Clay Roof Tile Installation Guide can be intimidating at first glance. A recent " Ask the Expert" response by TRI President and Technical Director Rick Olson describes how to use the tables to determine fastening requirements.

Question - "Oklahoma is considering going to a 115mph wind zone in November of this year. I need help to decipher the tables in the back of your TRI manual so to know how to use these on an install."

Response - Although they seem onerous at first glance the wind tables are not too bad to navigate with a few clues.

If Oklahoma is considering the 115 MPH in November, we will assume they are going with the 2012 IBC/UBC and the tables in appendix C would apply. Since most tile roofs go on Gable/Hip roofs we would be looking at tables 9A (roof slopes 5.5:12< 6:12), or Table 9B (Roof Slopes 2.5:12<5.5:12, shown below) or table 9C (Roof Slopes 6:12< 12:12).

This will let us know what the wind uplift would be on the tiles. Since you are 115 MPH, you would use the 120 MPH column for exposure C (most used outside of coastal areas)

Example: 5:12 hip roof at 25 ft Mean roof height, exposure C is 13.4 ft-lbf of resistance (from table 9B)

Now we need to go to table 7 on page 85 (since Table II on page 95 only has the very high wind options that are above your 120).

Here we list all of the fastener options and their corresponding resistance. You need to select the tile profile. So lets say a flat tile on a batten on a 15/32" sheathing.

We need an option that will exceed the  13.4 so we will be looking at the 1-#8 screw at as a minimum with  25.6 in Table 7.
