A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

"The best teachers are those who show you where to look but don’t tell you what to see." Alexandra K Trenfor

May is teacher appreciation month, and it occurs to me that every single person who works at IVYP is a teacher. Some are obvious. Most of our employees work directly with children. We honor them for creating a loving, trauma-informed environment that nurtures growth and development. That work has been so vital this year. Working in-person during a pandemic is terrifying, but it has been absolutely essential to our community.

Our Family Advocates are also teachers. Currently, our FRC is hosting a 7-week course for grandparents. We just completed a 12-week parenting workshop. Grandparents and parents are also important teachers for children, and we are strengthening their skills.

We don’t have a big administrative staff, but every single one of us has the opportunity to learn and to teach each day. We show our appreciation in many ways, big and small. I’m especially proud that we have a teacher scholarship fund to support our staff to advance their learning. When we invest in our teachers, we invest in our children. I hope you will join me in appreciating our teachers by making a donation to our scholarship fund.

"I love knowing that the work that I am doing here makes a difference in our local community. All of the people that I have met through IVYP are such an inspiration and have taught me a lot about myself and my abilities to grow and learn."

Children's Mindfulness

May is mental health awareness month! AT IVYP's Children's Center our young students have been practicing mindfulness in the classroom. Just like for adults, mindfulness can be an extremely powerful tool for young children in lowering stress and anxiety as well as promoting self-control and emotion regulation skills. Visit IVYP's Kid's Corner page to find some great mindfulness activities you can do at home with your child.
Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try that highlights ingredients you can get at our food distribution. This month we are highlighting snap peas! Springtime means snap pea season! Green peas are fairly low in calories and contain several vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They’re also high in fiber and protein. We love this salad because it incorporates fresh peas and their shells. Crunchy and delicious!

Get Involved with IVYP
IVYP needs your support as we work hard to support our community in the wake of COVID-19. We’ve stepped up and we need your help to continue. Please consider a donation to IVYP’s COVID-19 Response Fund to help us continue to provide the caring, proactive and flexible support our community needs.
Be a diaper champion by sponsoring the cost of diapers for local families. Diapers are one of the most consistent requests from our families at our FRC. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $100 per month per baby so every contribution makes a big difference.
Did you know that many of our most vulnerable students don’t have a dedicated place at home to do their school work? IVYP will purchase and distribute folding desks to any GUSD student who has a need through our new Study Table Fund. To support this effort click here to donate.
