Not everyone can say that they have cut open people in an operation room and faced off a swarm of army ants in the in a rainforest, but National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) Research Associate Dr. Dave Ahrenholz, MD, FACS has done both. Venturing far from the familiar surgical practices of operating on patients, Dr. Ahrenholz has trekked in Ecuadorian rainforests on a mission to photograph and identify all the rare or unknown insects of the lepidopteran order.

Dr. Ahrenholz is currently working with Instituto Ecuatoriano Forestal y de Areas Naturales (INEFAN) to document the behavior of these butterflies. The Smithsonian is preparing to publish a book with his collected data on Ecuadorian Metalmarks. C lick  here  to read more!

A Window to the Past
NASM Intern Anne Rusher
Graduating from James Madison University (JMU) in May 2017 with a major in architectural design and a minor in art history, Anne Rusher was "very concerned" about her path after graduation. However, by drawing on her childhood memories of the National Air and Space Museum (NASM), Anne is well on her way.

This summer, Anne is interning with NASM's exhibits production department at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility. Directly involved with designing and creating NASM exhibits, Anne is able to merge her passions for architectural design and art history while also leaving her own mark on the treasured museum of her childhood.
