“The mission of St. Augustine of Canterbury parish is to grow closer to Christ and one another through worship, prayer, learning and service, and to dedicate our lives to serving Christ in the world through the power of the Holy Spirit.” | |
St. Augustine’s is partnering with
Youth Guidance and Feed the Lambs
to gather Backpack Supplies for school kids in need!
Founded here in 1973, Youth Guidance provides local youth with limited resources, the daily meals, support from caring mentors, and access to a safe place after school and in the summers. Students participate in one-on-one and group mentoring programs that teach life skills like culinary arts, bicycle repair, sewing, boat mechanics, sports and more. Visit Youth Guidance>
Feed the Lambs is an awesome after-school program offering recreation, education, mentorship and summer camp at no cost, for underprivileged children who would otherwise be unable to obtain these services in IRC. They help a lot of kids and do it on a pretty small budget. Visit Feed the Lambs>
Both organizations need our help filling their students’
Back Packs with Supplies for the coming year!
Here’s where you come in …
We have set up St. Augustine School Backpack Roundup on Amazon.com.
There you can buy one $8 pack of glue, or $200 worth of calculators to help fill these kids backpacks. There’s a right-sized donation for all who want to participate. As selections are made from the wishlist, those items will be fulfilled and disappear. We encourage you to reach high on the list to the most expensive items, leaving a wide range of options for others who want to contribute less. In the end, it’s the kids that win!
| |
Please resist the urge to shop at a local store instead. Schools are very specific about what the kids are supposed to have. As you complete your purchase, the church mailing address will pop up to send your items to our Backpack Program. You can add a note if you’d like to let us know who it is from.
This is an equal opportunity for local parishioners, and those who have traveled north for the summer, to give back to our community and return the blessings that we have so richly received.
Deadline for Ordering is Wednesday, July 6. SHOP NOW!
Note: When you log on it will allow you to purchase under your own Amazon account or make an OTP (One Time Purchase). If you do the OTP, it will simply email you a pass code to allow you to move forward and enter your billing information.

Last Friday night a Common Table group gathered for a delicious pasta dinner hosted by Richard Calkins and Deb Kavanagh. Although the deluge prevented Mary Moriarty and Louise Duncan from attending, Janice and Larry Minner, Jacinth Brown, and Barbara and Pat McGowan prevailed and enjoyed an evening of lively discussion.

Be sure to share your Common Table get-together pictures!

Church Staff!
Do you often wonder exactly who does what for our parish community? In the coming weeks, we will invite members of our church staff to share their stories; telling how they serve the church, and what specific tasks they do to help make St. Augustine's function. This "Shining a Light on" series is aimed at helping parishioners get to know their parish community better.
| |
This week's "Shining a Light" staff spotlight is on Dana Clearwater, Secretary/Receptionist. Dana came to St. Augustine’s in 2019 during a time of great transition in her life where not only did she receive a job position, she also received a blessed opportunity to heal from the storms of life in a safe and nurturing environment. In her job interview, she was told by the previous rector, the Rev. Mike Goldberg that St. Augustine’s was the place “where broken people come to heal” and that she would be welcome here. Since that time, the baton has been passed to Father Wes and St. Augustine’s continues to be a place where people come first.
Today, Dana wears many hats at St. Augustine’s. She is really a church musician who is moonlighting as church administrative personnel! Most often, you will find her chained to a computer at a desk piled dangerously high with papers. Her voice is likely the one you will hear first on the phone when you call the church office. Dana’s work as an administrative professional spans anything from answering the phone, creating the bulletin and the upkeep of membership roles to taking notes for vestry meetings and helping out Tom Hall with music administrative activities when needed. She is the soprano section leader for the choir here at St. Augustine’s, and is also an active professional vocalist out in the community. You can reach Dana at: dclearwater@staugustinevero.com

New Healing Hearth Meals Ministry
Plans are underway to start up St. Augustine's new Healing Hearth meals ministry to care for those parishioners who are ill, have had surgery or have lost a loved one. We hope to have 12 wonderful volunteers who would be willing to make and deliver home-cooked meals as a way of showing our care for these folks. Cheri Foster will be coordinating this ministry. Would you like to join us in caring for one another through this ministry?

"The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, 'Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.' So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him."

A Ministry Minute:
The Needlepoint Kneelers
Followup shared by Mary Rianhard
Last week Mary Strahosky shared the story of how the Needlepoint Kneelers came to be. This week Mary Rianhard adds this note:
Father Rowe headed this project. He had done this at another church and had the designs created at Washington National Cathedral. He left a map of how they were supposed to be placed. Apparently it was misplaced. He gathered us together in the fall and we were told to be finished as soon as possible so he could send them to the Cathedral to be put together. They were installed the following spring. Father Rowe was a very gifted man and a very good friend to Father Mike. When he retired he and his wife moved to Vero to help Father Mike and to enjoy the warm weather. He and his wife moved to the west coast of Florida to be near his son.
Do you have a Ministry Minute or treasured church story to share? Please send it to Barbara McGowan
