GC 80 RECAP
Bishop Brewer's Baltimore Briefings
The 80th General Convention of The Episcopal Church wrapped its business this past Monday after an intense four-day schedule (delayed by one year and shortened from eight days due to COVID concerns).
| |
The beginning of the meeting was marked by a fatal shooting on the day before Convention near the hotel hosting the event which led to a march to the scene by the Bishops Against Gun Violence and hundreds of supporters. Click here to read the Episcopal News Service story.
| |
The Rt. Rev. Gregory O. Brewer, bishop of the Diocese of Central Florida, videotaped Daily Briefings in which he outlined the packed agenda and discussed his concerns about issues such as the A059 proposing a more streamlined process for Book of Common Prayer revision, Resolution D083 supporting abortion rights, Resolution A226 honoring St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and the victims of the violence perpetrated there on June 16, 2022 and much more.
On Day 3 of the convention, Bishop Brewer shared the news of the passing of The Rev. Canon Nelson Pinder and spoke of him as "the loss of an embodied legacy. Pinder's fight for civil rights is a vital part of the history of the Diocese of Central Florida and The Episcopal Church.”
In these daily video chats Bishop Brewer expressed his gratitude for the Diocese of Central Florida deputation members and invited all to watch the video recap of their Convention work and experiences that will be made available shortly.

Church Staff!
Do you often wonder exactly who does what for our parish community? In the coming weeks, we will invite members of our church staff to share their stories; telling how they serve the church, and what specific tasks they do to help make St. Augustine's function. This "Shining a Light on" series is aimed at helping parishioners get to know their parish community better.

This week's "Shining a Light" staff spotlight is on Gary Attanasio, St. Augustine's Sexton. Originally from Putnam County, NY, Gary and his wife Mary moved to Vero Beach in September 2017. He and Mary have been married for 26 years and have two children, Alexis and Robert. Currently Alexis is a third year law student at Pace Law in New York and Robert is a recent graduate of Indian River State College. Gary and Mary are certainly proud of their children's accomplishments and pray for their continued success!
Gary is a retired NYPD Police Officer, and has worked on and off in maintenance for 37 years. Before moving south, he worked at St. James the Apostle Church and School, performing maintenance and security duties. It was a wonderful place to work and felt more like home because Mary had been teaching there for 23 years!
Gary feels fortunate to have been hired as the Sexton at St. Augustine's in May 2018. He is responsible for maintaining all church and parish buildings, setting up for meetings, and maintaining church equipment. He also helps to care for and sustain the Columbarium. Most importantly, he makes coffee for the staff in the morning! From Gary's perspective, St. Augustine's has proved to be a warm and welcoming place to work. It's also been pleasant getting to know some of the many wonderful people who worship here. He is grateful to be part of this community.
During his free time, you might find Gary relaxing poolside or walking
his dog Baer, a German Shepherd mix who has become quite popular in the neighborhood. Gary is also an avid Yankee fan and really misses going to games at Yankee Stadium.
You can reach out to Gary at: gattanasio@staugustinevero.com

"Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."
